Microsoft has started testing ads in the Windows 11 Start menu. Notably, the Start menu shows ads in the form of app recommendations and comes hot off the heels of the latest insider build update.

Building on top of recent improvements like grouping recently installed apps and showing your frequently used apps, we are now trying out recommendations to help you discover great apps from the Microsoft Store under Recommended on the Start menu. This will appear only for Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel in the U.S. and will not apply to commercial devices (devices managed by organizations). This can be turned off by going to Settings > Personalization > Start and turning off the toggle for “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more”. As a reminder, we regularly try out new experiences and concepts that may never get released with Windows Insiders to get feedback. If Microsoft would make it impossible to use a third party Start Menu, I still would hardly ever visit the start menu at all.

In that case I would use a pinned shortcut (on the taskbar) to a folder with all program shortcuts I need in it. Forces me to doubleclick on the subfolders and shortcuts, but that is much better than this awful, not organized, 'start menu' of Windows 11. I am sure MS can do nothing to make that impossible.

But I myself rather think the real reason for blocking StartAllBack and ExplorerPatcher is the (in other topics mentionned) future fully removing all old Windows 10 options from Windows 11. So I hope the package I use now for the task bar and the start menu, Start11, will stay a while...

? Then why exactly haven’t they blocked them all? Why does Start11 still work? And I believe there are others. I don’t think this is the reason why at all. Apart from the fact the real reason has already been explained.

Even if they did block ALL Start Menu apps and tweaks, Like others, I rarely use it and don’t actually need to with Stardock Fences installed.

Maybe, I’m not convinced. We’ll see.
I can make a menu with fences, well I actually do use Stardock Fences as my menu so no loss really. For anything system related outside of the system icons I‘ve pinned to Fences, I use search and pin.

I’ll be honest mate, I’d never heard of it until joining this forum. The only headlines I've seen are the ones related to MS temporarily blocking it. (In insider previews)

I do remember that MS, in some Windows versions I can't recall at the moment, blocked all browsers but it's own Internet Explorer (or at least made it very difficult to install them). Then the European commission warned them that that was unfair competition and they were forced to show a window at start of the use of the system where you could choose which browser to use. I think such a thing would happen again if they would only allow Edge to be used as browser!

For other third party applications might happen the same, but I doubt if a EU will raise its voice for just a particular start menu app... We will see.

~~If it does happen I'll try to ignore them. If that doesn't work I'll create a shortcut folder on the desktop and place shortcuts to the programs I use the most in it.~~ Totally forgot that I have the Power Start App. Seeing that it's an app available in the MS Store I wonder if MS will eventually put it on the blocked list.
