Monitor Upgrade?

Hello All

Have an Intel 10700, and Geforce 1660 Super video card

Would a 144hz Monitor run fine on my system at either 1080P or 1440P resolution? Kinda still a noob with hardware things, but have opportunity to upgrade it, and then gonna hand current one down to Mom to use with her newer Mini PC--her current monitor not compatible with newer Mini PC, only has DVI and VGA connections.

Do have Displayport on my EVGA 1660 Super video card, and HDMI
(If i go with Displayport, will be my first time using it)

The card is spec'd to support 7680X4320 @ 120Hz. (Requires DisplayPort and DSC, which is a compression mode.) 1440P at 144Hz should be trivial.

Whether it has enough computational power to game at 144Hz is something else.

Yeah i maybe better off sticking with 1080P--i'm not really sure on the computational power part. just want system to run games great without any visual lag, and also have a good monitor for Moms newer Mini PC (possibly this one) if i do buy a newer one)

Once you go 1440... you'll never go back.
Your system can handle it easily.

Yeah i never used 1440P resolution on any of household Computers so far, but i may with this one if i find one can afford, and got the specs want, and such lol

Been for many years at 1600x900
then upgraded to finally 1080P in 2019 1920x1080

In your sys specs it states you have a 2560 x 1600 display, which I remember seeing a screenshot from in show us your desktop in Tenforums, and I love your aspect ratio..

2560x1440 is the resolution that i use on all of my displays.

Occasionally, the aspect ratio is problematic. Many programs and games, won't display properly on a 16:10 screen.
Well, they can be made to display properly, but they don't do it naturally.

I have a 16:10 aspect ratio OLED screen (3456 x 2160) on my System One that I've used for a year and a half. All my apps run like they should. What programs have you found that don't display properly?

Mostly old stuff. Links 2003 and Diablo II both had to be... "adjusted" for 16:10, for example.
on D2, the mana and health balls were oval instead of circular. If you didn't know, you wouldn't notice.

On Links 2003, the scenery looked like it was anti-aliasing. Again, if you didn't know you wouldn't notice.

But both games were correctable. I just had to pick a workable resolution.
Like for Links 2003, I have to pick 1280 x 960, even though 1280 x 800 is 16:10

Wallpapers are another thing. Most are 16:9 and get stretched on my screen.
So I just crop them to a 16:10 resolution.

These days though, I can download 16:10 walls fairly easily.

Thanks! Nothing there that I would ever run. The software I normally run is listed in My Computers, System One. It's all recent, so I wouldn't anticipate having any problems.

Yeah... 16:10 monitors are a lot more common today, than they used to be.
Same with others like... 21:9 ...etc.

American Truck Simulator
Euro Truck Simulator 2
Firefighter Simulator :The Squad
Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered
Wreckfest,
Forza Horizon 5
Grand Theft Auto V at times
Secondlife

So hopefully if i do snatch up a 1440P monitor all those games run fine hehe

Back in the days of yore... a 2500K and a GTX 970 could drive a 1440p monitor.
A GTX 1660 is 39% faster than a GTX 970.

my 2070super isn't really driving 1440p in current day games, mostly like 1600p with dlss or 1440p dlss if absolutely needed, f1 2023 runs at 4k with dlss at performance which is surprising but its only 1080p upscaled, Yes the gpu will be fine to run 1440p and above on desktop, movies etc etc, Games might take some more fiddling, All im saying is my 2070super is underpowered at 1440p now, 1660 is firmly a 1080p card in gaming speak. As far as i know a 1660 cant max BF2042 at 1080p.

yeah this card is EVGA Geforce 1660 Super, all i could afford to upgrade to in 2020 from a older Geforce 1050 2GB lol.

I'm fine staying with 1080P if i must, not a big deal to me really, just was trying with this Thread to make the final decision, then get it bought asap and then setup Family PC with the newer Mini PC possibly with my Old 1080P Monitor

I just didn't know which hz rating my card could handle if i do buy a newer Monitor and then hand current 1080P monitor down to Family for the Family Mini PC Desktop

It will handle 144hz no problem on the desktop, Just in games you wanna tie youre fps to youre refresh rate, So you'd be wanting 144fps in games to see the benefit
