I am looking for a replacement for Macrium. I have tried Hasleo and the free versions of Aomei and AShampoo, and have the same problem with all three: When I boot to the live USB flash drive, the mouse pointer is not visible. This is for a brand new not yet set up HP Victus laptop. I want to make a fail-safe backup image of the hard drive with all of the factory settings before booting into the OS Setup. I know the touchpad works because I tried a Linux live USB to confirm that the touch pad does work. My Macrium flash drive provides a working mouse only on the laptop that I used to make the live flash drive, but the touchpad does not work on the new laptop with the Macrium flash drive. The HP has an Elan touchpad, same as the old laptop on which the Macrium works. Does anyone have a suggestion? I have had this laptop almost a week and not yet booted it into setup. FYI, I have tried both with secure boot on and off.

Thank you,
Dave

At a guess it’s a driver issue or some obscure setting in the BIOS?

It may very well be that you need a so-called "boot critical driver" for your touchpad. As Ghot noted, an external mouse is the easy solution, otherwise you will have to inject the driver for your touchpad into the bootable media. I could provide instructions but it is a bit of work :-).

More info: It used to be that touchpads used a USB interface. More and more laptops these days are using a Serial I/O (SIO) interface instead. These often do not have a driver in the Windows media.

As an example, I have a Lenovo laptop for which the touchpad does not work if I boot from Macrium Reflect boot media or even from a Windows installation disk. I can use an external mouse, but I prefer that everything work properly so I simply injected the drivers into my media.

Macrium & Aomei's WinPE creation tools allow you to add missing drivers while building the image. You don't need to DISM it.

The question is do these touchpad drivers work in WinPE? You just have download the right drivers, and find out.

Have you tried disabling Fast Boot in Bios?
I do not see a FAST Boot option in theBIOS. The only option related to speed is "POST Hotkey Delay", which I changed from 0 to 15 seconds.

It is an AMI BIOS, Revision # F.03.

I just realized that I gave some incorrect info in my original post: I have two Macrium live USB flash drives. I apparently used the drive for my PC when I first tried Macrium on the HP laptop. I just now tried the flash drive that was made with my old Acer laptop. The Touchpad works with that live flash drive. I can use that Macrium flash drive to make my "fail-safe" backup. But that brings up new questions:

I know the defunct Macrium Reflect Free does not support Secure Boot. Do I need to make my fail-safe backup with an application that supports Secure Boot? And to follow that up, does Hasleo, Aomei or Ashampoo free backup applications support Secure Boot?

Is it necessary for a rescue live flash drive to support Secure Boot? This HP Victus laptop makes it very easy to disable Secure Boot to use a live flash drive, so I can easily use a non-Secure Boot flash drive for recovery if that would not cause a problem for Windows 11.

To be totally honest, I would still be using Windows 7, or maybe XP, if security updates were still available. This new laptop was bought to run just two applications after security support ends for Windoes 10. I currently dual boot PCLinuxOS Debian Edition on my desktop, and will eventually run Linux only. I am probably obsessive-compulsive about backups - 25+ years ago, I was the customer service guy on the telephone that had to tell doctors and lawyers that they lost everything on their computer because the hard drive failed and they never bothered to back it up.

Thank you for your help! Secure Boot is like a foreign language for me.

Does the touchpad work if you boot winre.wim on the new laptop?

You can test by the following command

reagentc /boottore

then reboot.

If it does work, then you can either remake your pe using the new winre.wim, or you can probably export the drivers from it

I finally got Macrium to work with the new laptop. I decided to try making a new rescue flash drive thinking maybe the old one had been corrupted. When I booted it on the new laptop, I realized what the problem was - the new flash drive is Macrium ver4sion 8. The old flash drive was made with version 7.3.

Even injecting the touchpad driver did not help. But a cheap Amazon basics USB mouse works, as does a Bluetooth mouse.

I had this problem last week with my wifes Lenovo Yoga. Had to restore an image after Ledger Live was detected as a false positive and caused my AV to go into a spasim and remove crap from everywhere and killed her profile.

Checked device manager for the driver that the touchpad was using (Wacom Driver)
Downloaded the drivers from Lenovo, had to extract the exe to find the .inf file
Formatted the Hasleo boot USB so it would ask again if I needed to add any drivers when re-creating it..
Added the .inf file, let Hasleo complete the boot USB creation and all good.
Mouse/Touchpad now showing on boot to Hasleo USB
Good result because using the TAB key at boot is boring.

    …still on a horse.
If your mouse is BT, I don't think there is BT support in pre-boot. Use a good old fashioned corded usb mouse. My usb wireless mouse (not BT)does work in one of my systems but a corded mouse will work in either.

I have used a Bluetooth Mouse with Macrium PE. The wifi worked but not the touchpad.

But was there an USB mouse adapter (which makes it really an USB mouse) vs. only using your PC's Bluetooth antenna?

There was no adapter.

Even injecting the touchpad driver did not help. But a cheap Amazon basics USB mouse works, as does a Bluetooth mouse.
BT didn't work for me when I tried it which used the built in BT from the Intel WiFi/BT Combo adapter. I think it has more to do with if the mouse can be seen as a PS/2 mouse already. What internal BT were you using as maybe it works for older BT Adapters but not newer ones.
