Solved My 13700KF is getting murderously hot


Those frames do help quite a bit but they are also extremely touchy in the sense of socket pressure. There are no torque numbers so if you go too tight or too loose it can cause some really weird and tough to track down issues. I lost a lot of hair before i got it down. Just food for thought. Hope it works out

When I built my PC, I went for the Thermalright specifically to reduce the chance of overtorquing. You stop when you feel resistance, in a X pattern (criss cross).

That is what I am using. It has padding on the board side so it you don't have to worry about over-torquing. It isn't that sensitive in getting each screw at exactly the same torque. You just need a screwdriver and not a torque wrench.

But also, a frame really isn't needed for a air cooler and actually may be detrimental (compared to standard locking mechanism).

There are some models that sit on the CPU and "float" over the motherboard, so screw tightness is important on those.

The Thermalright contact frame that @MysteriousBox and I use have insulated "feet" on the bottom that sit flush on the
motherboard when installed.
Edit: and apparently @PerpetualCycle too :-)

Looks like a contact frame is in my future. The heat sink is tight and solid. The high temp is down to 95C but it is still throttling on performance tests.

So, a contact frame and new TIM (again).

I'll post back when I have more results.

Why bother? As posted I limited my max temperature to 85C and the performance hit in Cinebench is only 2.5%

My CPU never ever used to get even close to 80C, much less 85C. Usually top range was about 60 to 65.

It's idling at 45C when the room temp is 19C. Something isn't right.

45C seems reasonable. This is what Gemini says about your CPU idle temp:

The normal idle temperature for an Intel Core i7-13700KF is between 30°C and 45°C. Temperatures up to 50°C can still be normal depending on your room temperature and background tasks, but anything consistently over 55°C while truly idle usually points to a cooling or background software issue.

Ok, so I tried the retention bracket contact frame. My idle went down 6 degrees and it doesn't top out at more than 75C during the passmark test. Guess my stock retention bracket was warped after all.

I am closing this thread as solved. Thank you for all the help and information everyone. :-)
