How can WSD work when the printer was on the old WiFi? It never connected by itself in the past until I connected a laptop via USB and told it the SSID and password.

I have discovered that my new router is transmitting the old SSID and accepts the old password as well as its own and different ones. This explains why the printer and IoT gadgets are still connected!

Sadly, the router transmits only one SSID for both 2.4GHZ and 5GHz, so although it's appreciated, no IoT gadgets will connect and there is no way to separate them. I spent hours reconfiguring all my LIFX bulbs.

WSD comes from pc and it seeks out new lifeforms and new civilisations (new printers ha ha). My work laptop finds and connects to printers so long as it is connected to internet even if I never set them up. Trust me wsd just works.

No, this is not what happened in my case. When I clicked on the icon for the printer in File Explorer, it opened up the printer's interface. This proved categoriacally that the printer was STILL connected to the SSID of the disconnected router.

If I connect to a different wifi in my house (a router behind router) the printer never shows up.

You don't even have to know what WiFi Direct is for your printer to use it. Your Canon MG3150 printer supports WiFi Direct. It is no mystery.

You said your new Gateway (modem/router) has a different SSID than the old one. Is there a reason you didn't change that to the same one your previous one used?

Doesn't your ISP let you make any configuration changes to the Gateway? My ISP doesn't let me make many changes to the Gateway. However, it does let me change the SSID and its password. Also, I also was able to change from one SSID for all bands to a different SSID for each band.

I could have set the SSID and password as you suggest. But I chose to leave the default in case my wife ever needed to reset it. She would not have known how to change it again.

If it helps, I think I understand what you're saying. The printer connected to the router without you choosing the SSID and entering the password. As for WSD, my guess is that it allows a computer to connect directly to the Wi-Fi on the printer.

I've never been a big fan of WiFi so I'm probably not much help. I simply build computers and do what I can to configure them so please excuse my naivety if I'm mistaken. It just seems to me that the printer is finding a way through the PC to connect and my guess is that some sort of handshake is in order here. This is the reason I asked about MAC. The MAC is written in stone so the PC should recognize it immediately if it were used on that PC before. That's all I have. Yup. I'm a dinosaur.

As I keep repeating, my printer stayed connected because the new router, (supplied gratis) as a replacement for a storm-damaged unit, transmits the SSID of the old unit and accepts the old password. My ISP thoughtfully programmed the new router to be a shoe-in for the old one.

For starters.. if they know your ssid and password configurations, I would be finding a new provider.

Without having physical contact to your old router/modem I don't see them having the SSID and password. I'm going to keep a watch on this thread to see what you find out.
