That is a classic problem when distributing independent executables on Windows!

When an application is compiled in w64devkit/MinGW without a valid digital signature (Certificate Signing), Windows treats the executable as untrusted. On the first run, Windows Defender SmartScreen blocks it and displays the message: "Windows protected your PC - Unknown application".

How to Guide Users on the Forum​

To help the forum members run the app immediately without changing any code, provide them with these instructions:

Solution 1: Bypass the SmartScreen Warning (Easiest)​

1. When the blue SmartScreen alert appears, click on the "More info" link.
2. The "Run anyway" button will appear in the bottom-right corner.
3. Click it to launch the app normally.

Solution 2: Unblock via File Properties​

If the downloaded file was blocked directly by the browser:

1. Right-click the .exe file and select Properties.
2. On the General tab, go to the bottom and check the "Unblock" box.
3. Click Apply and then OK.

Solution 3: Quick Command via PowerShell​

For users who prefer using the command line or if you want to include a .bat script alongside the app:

How You Can Solve This for Distribution (For the Developer)​

If you want to prevent users from getting this warning in the future, here are two approaches:

1. Distribute as a .zip archive: Zipping the .exe file significantly reduces direct SmartScreen triggers upon downloading.
2. Create a Self-Signed Certificate: You can generate a local certificate via PowerShell/SignTool on Windows and sign the .exe after compiling in w64devkit. While SmartScreen may still pop up on third-party machines until the app builds up "reputation", the executable will no longer be listed as "Unsigned".

I unblocked the Zip file and it runs ok. Trouble is, for me, is the text is too small for my tired eyes on a laptop screen.
