Need Help With Reinstalling The Bios On My HP Compaq 8300 Elite Small Form Factor Desktop Computer

I tried to setup a dual boot setup on my computer with windows 11 pro & linux mint, I think that the linux distro has somehow corrupted my computer bios & I'm needing to reinstall the bios so I can hopefully use my computer again. It was working perfectly fine before I tried setting up the dual boot setup.

What is not working makes you think it's the BIOS?

please enter your BIOS
on a HP its press/tap at boot the ESC and delete keys to get to the boot menu
then F10 to enter the BIOS setup

then using the arrow buttons go to the BOOT tab
then go down to UEFI Boot order

move the Windows boot entry to the top of the boot list
use the F5 and/or F6 key

when Windows is at the top of the boot list
press F10 to save settings

then go to exit and then save and exit
press enter for the system to restart into the Windows boot loader

Because the bios screen controls what the computer does before it boots, so far I've been unable to get my computer to boot up properly ever since I tried to setup the dual boot with the linux mint distro. It's like linux actually tried to take over my computer, I think that I made a huge mistake trying to do this because my computer was performing great previously.

Can you take a picture of your bios boot tab with a smart phone and paste it into this thread? You should be able to change the boot sequence to force Windows to boot first.

Operating systems have no control of the settings in BIOS if you believe your computer boot problem is BIOS settings, then reset BIOS by taking out the CMOS battery for a few minutes.

When you install Linux on the Windows drive it creates a EXT4 partion and creates a grub boot entry in the Windows EFI partion.
It adds an entry in the bios boot menu above the Windows boot. This boots first which provides what is called a Grub Menu.

You then get to choose which operating system you would like to use at boot time. A restart is required to go from one to the other.

Grub is a Linux boot manager why do you think this entry caused the problem?

You have not told us what problem you are having or any error message; we are just chasing ghosts.

If Mint boots but Windows doesn't, try running in the terminal while in Mint.

This should give you the option to choose between Mint and Windows at startup. The command adds the Windows entry to GRUB.

If the Linux installation failed and Windows 11 no longer boots, format the EFI system partition and then recreate the Windows boot files using bcdboot.

Formatting the EFI system partition is typically unnecessary. Only format it if you want to completely wipe all existing boot data. A common example is after removing a dual-boot installation, as formatting deletes all bootloaders and boot managers stored on the partition.

If you haven't already done so, you need to create a Windows 11 installation USB flash drive first. Then, from the motherboard's one-time boot menu, select the Windows 11 installation USB as the boot device. If the USB appears twice in the boot menu, select the entry with the "UEFI" prefix. This ensures that WinPE boots in UEFI mode, allowing bcdboot to automatically identify the FAT32-formatted EFI system partition and copy the UEFI boot files to it.

Run the following commands:

diskpart
list volume (find the EFI system partition volume number)
select volume # (use the EFI system partition volume number)
format quick fs=fat32
list volume (find the Windows partition letter)
exit

bcdboot x:\windows (replace "x" with the Windows partition letter)

I do appreciate all of the replies, but I gave up on getting my computer fixed properly and I had an additional desktop sitting around not being used so I decided to install linux mint on it and it's working great so far.

Do you have a recent backup for the PC that you installed Linux on? A windows restore would remove the linux Mint boot entry in the Windows EFI partion.
