Not sure why I have 2 computers there. I think that's the kernel, idk.

Seems like I could slap another drive in, mirror the OS over, then boot it as one drive. Why would windows care? I know for sure XP wouldn't care. So if one of the drives fail I will have to reinstall windows again after replacing the drive? If I have to reinstall then how do I get the data off the drive? I can't plug a NVME drive into my win7 rig.

Kinda starting to get mad now because those engineers are busy putting the start button in the middle of the taskbar and stupid crap like that instead of figuring out useful stuff like raid. I have to say if that is true then win11 is the crappiest OS I've seen. All it has done is make computing a miserable nightmare that never seems to end.

And speaking of never ending.... I forgot I had a search going on one of my sata archive drives for "gigabyte". 2 hours later it's still looking. My win7 pc would have had it done and forgotten.

As savvy as you are you should be putting win7 on your rig. Starting to wonder if I should.

I'll let you in on a little secret. You're not the only one who owns a 7-11

Be rest assured I'll be Running Win 7 Ultimate on my next build as well.

No, where do you get drivers for the new hardware? I doubt I could find chipset drivers for my board for win7.

You can plug NVMe in and out of a system board if it's on a card easily enough.

Well, that's part of the reason why I don't buy bleeding edge state of the art hardware. It really is about user preference.

Even if I'd gotten the cheapest board gigabyte offers I still don't think I could find drivers for the chipset for win7. I'd have to get something used off ebay.

Is that a bad thing?

Lots of times you can find brand new discontinued hardware at a good price too.

No it's not bad but it wouldn't be much different than what I already have. I don't think cpus had more than 4 cores until after win10 came out in 2015.

Actually they did. They just weren't as popular back then. Even the 1366 socket used six core CPUs and that was Intel's flagship quad core platform to the domestic end user. This was before the days of Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge.

Some were surprisingly fast for what they were. Many could be clocked past 3 GHz and back then that was plenty of speed as precious little in the way of hardware could handle much more. I'm still running 3 Bloomfield chips in my basement as I type this and they're running Win 7, 10, and tweaked versions of 11.

The sandy bridge can run 3.7ghz stable with 4 cores with the stock air cooler from intel and wads of dust bunnies wedged in the fins. I don't know if anything had surpassed that before win10 came out. So I wouldn't know how to find win7 drivers for anything that's faster than the win7 system I already have. The only thing I can imagine is finding a way to force win10 drivers on win7 and hope they work.

Sandy bridge followed the legendary i7 Bloomfield. I have to agree that the architecture of those prototypes was in many ways superior to what we have today. I run Win 7 Ultimate on a 6900K Broadwell X series chip clocked @ 4.1 GHz without issue. I'm hoping I'll be able to do the same with Skylake, but I didn't research that so I might be mistaken. Regardless, I have a KVM switch that can easily handle 4 PCs at once so I'm covered.

Here's an example of a First Gen Intel CPU with more than four cores that came out in 2010.

That looks pretty good. I wish I had known in 2011 lol. But it's only 2 more cores. How much time would it shave off a video encode? And with 2 more cores on the same 32 thickness it seems it would be harder to dump the heat, so it might require water or have to be clocked down.

I have the 2500k and it runs stable at 3.7 with the stock fan, but add 50% more and I have a hard time seeing it run that fast without overheating. Maybe in a burst but sustained pegging in video encoding is hard to imagine. What do you think?

I need to time the difference in a video encode on the 2500k and the 14900k just to see how much time I'm saving. Saving time is the real reason of doing all this.

I think you're pretty much set for what you already have. What you're using more than adequately suits your needs. If I were serious about encoding and I had the same build as you I'd be searching the net to learn how to do it with a GPU coz that's about the only way I could see myself improving on the speeds you're already getting. Face it. You're spoiled and that's okay.

I wouldn't say spoiled. This pc has been a lot of trouble. First I had a problem with encoding a 25 frame rate and having it come out as 25.77 or something goofy like that. Turned out it was a bad avidemux version. So I got a nightly build but then it started encoding in random ways which meant i could not join videos without reencoding all over again. So I went back to a older version. Then I had the problem of crashing with memory errors and it took a long time to figure out my cpu was getting too hot. So I setup a scheme to turn the ratio multiplier down at a certain temp, but all that work was randomly deleted for no reason. Evidently I can't do that in the bios, only on intel's software, which is prone to being deleted and defaulting to whatever the bios says. I really need a whole IT department to keep this Lamborghini going. It's hard to tell what is hardware related and what is windows 11, but everyday it's something to fix. That's why I went ahead and created an account here because I'm going to need help perpetually keeping this pc running.

If not for video conversion I'd be happier with my 2500k. I ran avidemux on that for years and years without one problem. Not one ever. No mismatches, no goofy frame rates, no memory errors, no crashes. I used to be spoiled. Now I'm tormented lol

"CrowdStrike's guidance said the workaround requires users first change the system's storage controllers from RAID to AHCI; Gujer said Windows' safe mode lacks the necessary drivers to interact with RAID." BitLocker workaround may offer aid for CrowdStrike customers | TechTarget

So with raid there is no way to boot into safe mode? What happens if you do anyway?

You won't be able to see or access any drives.
