new disk connection issue

I have this new USB disk, formatted in exFAT. I have many other disks (Seagate and Western Digital mostly), and they have no significant issues.
But this one, when I start my main computer with this disk connect, it hangs on startup of the computer. I hear the disk spinning, and the screen remains black for as long as you want.
It seems he wants to boot from it, but still never actually does. No error is thrown whatsoever.
I removed the files which are in the root of the disk, and I also removed a System Partition on that disk. The latter I suspected as being weird to be there, but after this, the behaviour is exactly the same.
How do I use the disk then ? Well, I just have to connect it after booting into Windows.
But the things is that I don't like unlogical and explained behaviour, in particular if it prevents me to bounce my computer.
There is no other disk (in a series of some 20 USB external disks) that has this behaviour.
So the question is : what is going on ? How do I prevent this behaviour ?

Then I an confused why it is formatted as exFat. According to Seagate it comes pre-formatted as ntfs. Did you purchase it from a reliable source ie Amazon NewEgg BestBuy,etc. Is it a used drive?
I would suggest formatting it as ntfs unless you plan on using it also with a Mac..

The exFAT format is to be compatible with Mac as well.

The drive is a new drive, and from a reliable source.

Don't plan to use it for a Mac but I would like to know if this disk is a bootable drive or not. I didn't make it bootable, that's for sure. If I format it, that setup would be lost, but I will format it anyway.

Checking its specs, it appears that a Seagate Expansion drive would come from the company formatted as ExFAT to allow read/write access from both Windows and MacOS.

The partitions you mention seem to be different from what I'd expect, though.

If it was mine, I'd probably use DiskPart to remove all partitions from the drive, create a single partition that uses all the space on the drive, and quick format it as NTFS or ExFat. I wouldn't set the partition to Active.

I might also check my BIOS settings to be sure that it defaults to booting into Windows.

what is the boot order set in your bios.. Bot from USB first... and then internal disk?

Removed a system partition that was located on an external disk.. was it Linux on the disk? (as windows as far i know cant run from external disks)
In windows disk-manager, how do the partitioning look like and is any partition set to active?

The boot order was:
- Windows Boot Manager (Samsung 840)
- Samsung 840
- all others disabled

The partition was marked as "System", I don't recall if it was active or not. It's a 200MB partition, and now it's a disabled one.
I found exactly the same on an older Seagate disk (which works all right - In fact, they all work OK).

I don't know how to "read" what's on a system parition, keep in mind these partitions have no drive letter

The name "Expansion Drive" may be in use for a long time, for example when other policies were active. It's like many marketing names : it means nothing. The real model name is something else.

Also note there is much false information on the internet, also on sites of wide known vendors.

It is possible to add a drive letter to partitions in the disk manager..
I dont run windows so i easy can open it and make a print screen and share :-) I'm working totally out from my memory when i did experiment with windows 10/11.. i do have a VM with windows 10, but that one is on another computer.

Perhaps my friend @Bree in here can make a short post about drive letters, active partitions on external drive that can impact a computer to not want to boot nicely and a fancy printscreen :-) I hope he will see my post as i just tagged him. :cool:
( to Bree: have a look on my post above and see what I'm thinking about.... I really need to fix an win11pro just for situations like this):oops:

Marking a partition as 'Active' only applies to MBR disks, and only one partition can be active at any one time. A legacy bios need to be told which partition to boot from.

A UEFI bios doesn't need to be told, it looks for any EFI partition it can find. For a GPT disk the EFI system partition is the boot partition. You cannot mark a GPT partition as active, that's only for MBR disks.

At 200MB this is likely to be an EFI partition, as that is the typical size. Disk Management does not allow any operations when you right-click on the EFI partition, they are all greyed out.

Diskpart however has no such restrictions. The LIST DISK command will show if a disk is GPT or MBR. The * under Gpt indicates it is a GPT disk, if there is no * it is MBR.

The examples above are for the Windows 11 disk in a UEFI laptop.

To give an EFI partition a drive letter, in Diskpart use these commands (where 'n' is the number of the external drive you want to look at, and 'e' is the partition number of the 200MB partition you want to look at).

To delete that partition, use the commands above, but instead of ASSIGN use the command DELETE PARTITION OVERRIDE
Be very careful not to select your Windows disk's EFI partition by mistake!

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    My SYSTEM FIVE is a Dell Latitude 3190 2-in-1, Pentium Silver N5030, 8GB RAM, 1TB NVMe ssd, supported device running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds (and a few others) as a native boot .vhdx.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, 1920x1080 touchscreen, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine. As its new home has an existing digital licence for Pro I've been able to upgrade the migrated OS from Home to Pro.

    My SYSTEM EIGHT is a 2-in-1 convertible Lenovo Yoga 11e (5th gen) type 20LN, Celeron N4120, 8GB RAM, 512GB NVMe ssd, a supported device for Windows 11. Currently running Windows 11 Pro, plus Insider Beta, Experimental 263xx and 29xxx builds as native boot vhdx.
