Have run both of these

Just to make sure I have been explicit about what I did today. Dell insisted that I reinstall the operating system on the SSD with which the laptop was purchased. My usage of the original smaller SSD is going to be different to how I was using the laptop with the replacement SSD. After finding out what conclusion Dell comes to tomorrow (I expect it will be inconclusive again), before the end of the week I will need to put the replacement SSD back in the laptop as it has my working o/s with all installed programs configured as I need them. Would appreciate your view on the impact on troubleshooting. If I am waiting for the machine with the original SSD installed to crash, I could have to wait a while, especially if I am not using it in the same way.

If I get to that point then I can run all the same bat files and tests on the replacement SSD which might be instructive?

I also cannot now remember if I got the BSOD when using the original samsung ssd (500GB) opposed to the replacement Kingston SSD (2TB). It is a while ago now but I think the BSOD happened on the original SSD as well. The fan run time and speeds seem much the same.

The new operating system created data for only eight hours so far.

There were no BSODs.

There were live kernel events related to the video.

There were no controller errors reported.

Secure boot upgrades have not yet been applied to the firmware.

Play video games and monitor for computer instability: hangs, freezes, black screens, BSODs, unexpected shutdowns and restarts, etc.

Monitor the computer using:

The computer does not have a designated (dGPU) and only has an integrated (iGPU).

The CPU and GPU can be tested.

Check with Dell: make sure that you can run software that was designed to test GPU and CPU.

Please make note of the importance of temperature monitoring and aborting the test in the GPU link.

FurMark - GPU Stress Test Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials:

FurMark - GPU Stress Test

Aim for 1 hour testing.

Abort testing as needed for temperature changes, freezing, display artifacts, etc.

a) Record the maximum temperature and post the maximum temperature into the thread

b) Record the test duration and post the uninterrupted test duration into the thread

c) Post images of each into the thread

Thanks for all this. But a lot of it goes over my head.

Some issues:
  • I don't have any video games
  • Not sure of the significance of 'live kernal events'. Presumably not good?
  • Should I apply Secure boot upgrades? And how do I do this? JUST FOUND ANSWER TO THIS
  • How do I use 'Reliability History' to monitor and what is is monitoring?
  • I'll check with Dell tomorrow. I expect they will say no.
  • Which app should I use to monitor temperature; HD Sentinel. What it has shown so far is much less concerning than the readings that HWInfo was showing.
  • "...post the uninterrupted test duration into the thread". ? Is this a recording from Furmark?
  • Are you thinking this is mor elikely related to GPU rather then CPU?
  • UPDATE: If what we are testing here is the GPU, how does my everyday office use trigger GPU failures?
Sorry for all the questions but need to have some sense of what I am doing otherwise it's too scary... LOL

Have to report that machine has been sitting idle (lid closed) for about 3 hours. Having gone back to it this is first time I recall starting to use it and fan not fired up either immediately or within a minute. Fan still silent now.... Hmmmm

Only thing different is that I did prop the back edge up about a centimetre off the desk earlier in the evening to allow more air flow because the fan had been running all day. This is weird, fan still silent, not running.......

  • Not sure of the significance of 'live kernal events'. Presumably not good?

They may be related to hangs and freezes.

  • How do I use 'Reliability History' to monitor and what is is monitoring?

The windows event viewer records many events.
Some are useful when troubleshooting.

Reliability History may be easier to read instead of the event viewer.

  • I'll check with Dell tomorrow. I expect they will say no.

Software that stress tests hardware can shorten troubleshooting.

  • Which app should I use to monitor temperature; HD Sentinel. What it has shown so far is much less concerning than the readings that HWInfo was showing.

Choose one of the temperature monitoring software applications: Speed fan, HW monitor, Speecy:

SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer: SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

Speccy - Free Download - Piriform: Speccy - System Information - Free

HWMONITOR | Softwares | CPUID: HWMONITOR | Softwares | CPUID

  • "...post the uninterrupted test duration into the thread". ? Is this a recording from Furmark?

Yes.
Whatever continuous Furmark test duration was accomplished record.

  • Are you thinking this is mor elikely related to GPU rather then CPU?

The workup is in progress.

The operating system was reinstalled so now you can see whether there are or are not new problems and what does and does not reoccur.

  • UPDATE: If what we are testing here is the GPU, how does my everyday office use trigger GPU failures?

Not ideal as it is suboptimal testing.

Example: home heating or air conditioning.

Testing heat under low stress, when the outside temperature is 45, may give the impression that heat works.

However when the temperature drops to 32 or 15 or 0 it may be very easy to detect inadequate performance or malfunctioning hardware.

Another software used to test hardware is OCCT:

These are multiple one hour tests (with default auto off).

This morning again quiet as a mouse as I started to use.....not typical. So I dropped the chassis down onto it's own feet on the desktop for a few mintes as I walked away from the machine and when I got back fan running slowly. Immeadiaetly propped it up again and fan went silent (to all intents and purposes, stopped) as it did last night. Do you think this might all come down the the design not allowing proper airflow....? If that is the case then I cannot beleive that Dell have not had other complaints.

That's interesting and it matches what I have seen on a couple of my laptops. I have three systems where the fan runs less frequently when propped up on a laptop stand vs laying flat on a table. None run excessively hot, but there is a marked reduction in how often the fan runs when these laptops are on a stand. Now I will not run a laptop unless it is on a stand.

Hmmmm, fingers crossed, but even if it does it is going to create more issues. If I then put my own SSD back wondering if I will have to reinstall windows on that for activation purposes...was installed as a local account and not linked to MS account as far as I recall.

When Dell replaces the motherboard ask them why / how this has happened and how to fix:

FX module is not supported in BIOS

Library is not supported in BIOS: \??
Do you think the bod they send to replace the mobo will have a clue...? They might but I will be surprised if that is the case. And I am hittign a block with Dell in responding meaningfully to the event logs you have extracted and summarised.

But I have sent that last post to Dell. Unsurprisingly the front line support has not responded. But they have batted off previous code you have extracted about crashes as software related rather than hardware related without any explanation.

Luckily they agreed to send someone out to do the replacement on-site because I am a bit stuck without a laptop for up to 14 days when I will not always be in same location as desktop. My plan now is to see what happens when they replace the mobo/processsor (and the fan and heatsink, once again). I have set myself up on the laptop with the original SSD (can just about make that work with regard to data that I will need to work with whilst I am testing the replacement mobo).

I am logged into the laptop with a MS account, at least until I get Windows activated on the new mobo. So hopefully that should work ok. And fingers crossed, using that new set up will produce no BSOD's. I may try to work with the supplied SSD for a while before reinserting my replacement which I need for additional data.

Just received, this from Dell following submission of the most recent event logs you extracted 🙏:

Thank you for sharing the logs and for providing valuable insights during the troubleshooting process. We truly appreciate your cooperation throughout.

Based on the analysis and confirmations received, we have identified a fault with the motherboard, and replacing the motherboard should help resolve the reported issue. Additionally, as fan noise has also been observed, we have included a fan and heat‑sink replacement as part of the service to ensure optimal system performance.

Regarding your question about the SSD:

  • If the SSD is the one originally shipped with the system, it will be removed and reinstalled onto the new motherboard by our technician as part of the replacement process.
  • However, if the SSD currently installed is a third‑party or customer‑installed drive (not shipped with the system), please note that our technician will not reinstall or handle that drive. Only Dell‑shipped components are serviced or reinstalled during the visit.
We recommend backing up any important data prior to the service as a precaution.

Hi again. Mobo incl integrated processor, heatsink and fan all replaced this morning. Sentinel showing hotter temps than before ! Had to de-encrypt drive for technician which continued after he had finished and now re-encrypting again. But don't think encryption should be causing so much heat...?

Only had 'warning' readings with HWinfo previously. Now Sentinel is giving warnings with same parameters set.

So, now I think I need to:
  • monitor this configuratuion I think primarily for any serious event viewer reports (could you help me out with that?)
  • assuming there are none, if temps and fan issues not resolved decide on approach with Dell (RMA?)
  • otherwise buy a cooler
