That's what happens with one-man shops. I've seen it happen before. Guy develops something, it gets wildly successful, then he gets in over his head and has to do a sell-off.

Corporation then offers it for free for awhile, then when you get people hooked in on it, BINGO! It's pay-up time. Some will do it. Others will vote with their feet and move elsewhere.

It's an old and typical story.

Nothing is preventing anyone to carry on using the current and future versions.
If it turns to payware, the free version will still work, just like Macrium 8.

I lost track of this project, but I just went back and read the recent things from @OAT. It's still MIT licensed, so hopefully someone forks it and keeps it nice for the home user. When they start saying things like "a roadmap for broader enterprise readiness," it's gonna get really turdy, really quickly.

Well I did use 2026.2.1.0 today and it seems to be working just fine so far. The GUI has changed and now looks like this:

To me the UI improvements like consistency are more important than other improvements. The older UI sometimes drove me crazy

Is there any way that I could write winget-like statements for software that is not officially supported by winget. Specifically, use a local copy of an installation program, e.g. MS Office

The best way to install Office automatically/silently is the Office Deployment Tool, if that’s what you mean by winget-like.
