The SetupDiagResults.xml you posted appears to be from an earlier upgrade attempt. It is dated August 12, 2026, and reports 0x800704C7 - 0x40004 (which means Setup processed a cancellation), not the more recent 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 failure. Microsoft says SetupDiag normally runs automatically after an upgrade problem, but this file does not appear to contain the results from your latest attempt.

After the upgrade fails again with 0xC1900101 - 0x40017, you can use the SetupDiag tool to analyze the logs and try to determine what went wrong (as @pseymour mentioned earlier).

WHICH problem. It has been years since I have used clean boot. Is there any details about it pertaining to the upGRADE of W10 to W11 and the problems facing me now? It would be extremely informative to understand just how it impacts this situation.

I read the docs on clean booting and msconfig which I have used in the past for tracking down errors having to do with runaway services and other things by stopping them from running by msconfig, or in conjunction with task manager services by stopping them from starting in the first place.
Since this W10 that I'm trying to upgrade from to w11 is working quite well at this time, I've concluded that msconfig and clean booting shouldn't be necessary to complete the upgrade successfully.

In another thread it seems to have been determined that the SetupDIAG that I provided the XML code output for was run after a previous upgrade retry, so the results were skewed. I'll have to try that whole process again, and following that post the requested info again. I'll have to reserve some time for that.

I'd like to try installing an empty 1TB SSD boot drive, disable all other drives and USB's and see if I can install a full W11 25h2 from scratch. That would seem to indicate that the motherboard and other hardware are functional in W11 and not the cause of the upgrade failure.

Does that make sense?

In another thread I talked about trying W11 native install on a new 1TB SSD to make sure it worked on a non-ugrade scenario.
I'm out of time today, but will log back in after that test is done.

Well I took a breather and made some decisions. Now that I'm back, I'm still seriously confused on this forum.

I got a new preserved replacement Gigabyte Z390UD motherboard with a newer BIOS. It turns out that these motherboards have BIOS issues of all sorts. The first one had 10k, the newer one has f11. They both have problems with freezing while you move around the options. Depending on what you select and how you save it (F10 or otherwise) it may or may not boot, and if it does, it may or may not run W10 correctly. Various issues appear.

I've spent a huge amount of time with W10 and trying to get it upgraded to W11 to no avail, instabilities, arbitrary reboots, etc.

So I have purchased an HP Z4 G4 which comes with W11 Pro, a stable BIOS and motherboard. I seriously dread rebuilding W11 to the state that my W10 is in, but I'm going to weather it out. I've spent too long on defective hardware and frustration fighting it, and wasting money on it.

Consider this my tossing in of the hat for this issue. It doesn't help much that Microsoft makes it just as difficult as possible to keep W10 alive.

I did try a clean install of windows on a different boot drive. All the hardware on the motherboard worked, but when It came to actually booting on the new drive, it failed saying that secure boot wasn't enabled. Going back to the BIOS the only secure boot option was either STANDARD or CUSTOM. Neither setting made a difference booting. Back to BIOS issues on the motherboard. That was actually the straw. The motherboard hardware was capable but not the BIOS settings.

Most Win 10 computers can be upgraded to win 11 in a supported or unsupported fashion.

(it may not be the newest version)

(Once using win 11 ESU is no longer needed)
