Solved No association with .jpg files

I already had issues with PNG - it's in my list.

But if it is still propagating, then perhaps there is a setting somewhere in all of this that is preventing us from changing those 'default' file types.

I'm gonna sift through the settings after my System Restore test.

Solved the problem. Entered the PowerShell command recommended by Abactuon in message #17 and now everything works as it should. I am also offered the "Open with..." selection and the "Always use this app to open .jpg files" options.

Doesn't work here though as it's already assigned to Irfanview, just not opening in it but in Print Pictures, wherever that came from and not giving the option to always open with.

the only way to do this is if they either fix it, or else I do it manually in the registry.
No, there is another way. In File Explorer right-click a .jpg and choose 'Open with... > Choose another app. Scroll to the bottom of the list and choose 'More apps'. Scroll to the bottom of that list and choose 'Look for another app on this PC'. Now you can browse for and select your Irfanview.

Magically, any app you select this way will forever more appear in the Open with list in File Explorer, and in the Default apps settings, as these 'before and after' screenshots show.

The Problem is jpg png etc are missing, not there gone away in the file associations

They are in the registry in my case as Irfanview files they are not list under Irfanview in Default apps and if I click on a jpg file it opens in print pictures.

And they are not listed in defaults for file types.

If you check "Try to change associations in System-Registry (for XP, Vista, Win7, Win8)" on the IrfanView installer, the installer will add "NoOpenWith" values under Photo and Movie&TV registry keys to try to prevent them from taking over default apps.

Although this method worked on some older versions of Windows 10, it will no longer work and it only has a bad side effect now. That is, it will break associations for .jpg, .png, etc. IrfanView should stop adding bogus registry values. At least the uninstaller should remove whatever the installer added.

Until IrfanView is fixed, you can manually remove "NoOpenWith" values to fix the problem. This .reg file worked for me:
INI:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\AppX43hnxtbyyps62jhe9sqpdzxn1790zetc]

Sucess! Thanks for that, I had come to the conclusion that it could actually be Irfanview causing the problem, so was checking reg entries with those in win10, this has saved me a few hours of probably getting nowhere!

Sorry, but no.

I suspect that having a picture opened in Photos app forced the association, which, magically, as soon as I uninstalled the Photos app, reverted to not only being available but also to being already associated with IrfanView like I want them to be.

I fully documented everything in these 4 posts above:

And as soon as I force uninstalled Photos, poof - the associations were there, and I could edit them, and set them to open in another program, everything.

"NoOpenWith"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\AppX6eg8h5sxqq90pv53845wmnbewywdqq5h]
"NoOpenWith"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\AppX9rkaq77s0jzh1tyccadx9ghba15r6t3h]
"NoOpenWith"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\AppXk0g4vb8gvt7b93tg50ybcy892pge6jmt]
"NoOpenWith"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\AppXvhc4p7vz4b485xfp46hhk3fq3grkdgjg]
"NoOpenWith"=-

That explains it. But having Photos forcibly uninstalled also removes those same keys, apparently, as as soon as I did, I was able to manipulate all of those file types I listed earlier and change the associated program for opening them.

I suspect this is in line with the discussion in other threads about default apps like browsers. Even been a few articles written about the whole fisasco now.

My solution (NOT THE GOOD ONE) I got rid of the default Open command that opens jpg in the print view in the registry editor
and create a new open command

open cmd or powershell as admin then type the following command

reg add HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.jpg\Shell\Open\Command /ve /t REG_SZ /f /d "\"C:\\Program Files\\IrfanView\\i_view64.exe\" \"%1\"

Ps. this do not solve the problem witch windows default apps do not find .jpg as a file type in Windows11 Default Apps tab but it makes jpg files open in IrfanView , You can replace the .jpg for any other file type u want to open in IV

The solution posted by emk is a better overall one, as it does not break the filetype associations, and still opens with IV the way it is supposed to, while also being recognized by Windows.

I uninstalled Irfanview then reinstalled it to hopefully clean up any junk associated with Iview. I then ran the REG file shown above and I was able to permanently set JPG, JPEG, PNG, and GIF file associations with Iview. They survived a reboot and I'm very happy. I may start using Win 11 again. Now to fix Word 2013 file opening menus. Yes, I know Office 2013 is unsupported. Horrors, I may even have to part with some cash and buy Office 2021.

Same thing happened here - no "common" image file extensions (.jp(e)g, .bmp, .png) were listed as available for association (altho .tif and .tiff were) - to either Irfanview and/or ACDSee which are both installed. As already stated, it's as if such extensions didn't exist, and/or Windows 11 refused to recognise them in relation to 3rd party software, but they double-clicked open in that built-in abomination.

And I found the same existed for .mp4 files ... no listing, and consequently could not associate with Daum Potplayer. .mp4 extensions were not listed under Defaults by application > Potplayer.

@emk solution fixed both.

Still trying to decide whether this is/was a Windows 11 flaw or 3rd party issue (the cynic in me says the former, MS imposing their preferences on the user, which is becoming more and more their wont).

EDIT : Actually studying the solution offered for Irvanview, I'm not quite sure how it was supposed to have also worked for Potplayer and .mp4 files. But after applying the reg entries, it just happened.

I have the same problem. There is no choice to change default app for jpeg or jpf files. I have used Iranview for ages.

I reported it to the Feedback hub
I assume the Feedback Hub is Microsoft. If so, then I think you are reporting to the wrong place. Irfan Skiljan might be the right person. The current version (4.58) was released back in May which I think was before Win 11.

For those of you who had trouble with this in the full blown release, try Apps>Apps&Features>Microsoft Photos and select "reset." Worked for me.

Yeah, I did that and it worked. Then I read your message minutes after trying it, so normally would be thanking you for the solution but sheer luck and curiosity of trying to find a solution myself!

Agreed. It does win the prize!

I struggled for 3 weeks to find the solution. Came up with the above solution in another thread this morning

I went to "Apps and Features", found Microsoft Photos, clicked on the hamburger menu on the far right, chose "advanced options" went to the Reset section and performed both the Repair and the Reset functions. After that I was then able to associate jpg and other file types to Irfanview.

I have a different but related problem. I can't get the photos app to open jpg files I get this error
1640424318141.png

This happens with every jpg I try to open no matter what folder they are in. I checked the "default settings" and jpg is shown as a default for Photos. Using "open with" I found they will all open in a browser, any browser, but not the Photo app. The default Photo app is so primitive that when I run it I don't find any way to access a directory so I can pick the photos I want it to open. Maybe I need to find a better app?

I don't know what this stuff is at the bottom of the message. Some trails or ghost from the snipping tool I assume.
