O why am I being offered Win11 from window updates

Hello,
Current OS is Win 10 21H2 (Build 19044.2604) and current spec is AMD Ryzen 7 1800X, 16GB Memory
My motherboard does not have TPM
If I run PC Health Check and then Check Now I get...
TPM 2.0 must be supported and enabled on this PC (TPM: TPM not detected)
The processor isn't currently supported for Windows 11 (Processor AMD Ryzen 7 1800X)

OK, so I know where I stand HOWEVER I am looking at this because I have just had a notification from the normal automated windows updates (I did not press the check for updates button) that Window 11 version 22H2 is ready and it's free, download and install.

So why am I being offered Win11 from window updates? and if I do download and install will it work?

Don't know why or if it will work but, if you want to try it then create a full system backup first ('Macrium Reflect Free' although there are other backup programs) and then try the update to Windows 11. If the update fails then I believe your OS will stay as-is with no damage but the backup will give you peace of mind while trying it out. You will need an external USB hard drive/SSD for the backup image.

You should at least bring your Win 10 install up to date.

What motherboard do you have? Are you sure your motherboard doesn't support TPM 2.0? Your motherboard might have TPM 2.0 but it may be disabled in the BIOS.

Back in April 2017 I bought an ASUS Prime X370-Pro motherboard and a Ryzen 7 1700X CPU. I had to enable TPM in the BIOS for it to be detected. For motherboard I had to enable Firmware TPM.

BTW, many motherboard manufacturers released BIOS updates about the time Windows 11 came out that automatically enabled TPM 2.0 if it was available.

With TPM 2.0 enabled my computer still was not Windows 11 compatible. That is because all Ryzen first generation 1xxx CPUs were not. After I replaced the 1700X with a 3700X CPU it was then compatible with Windows 11.

Once you enable TPM in the BIOS you can run the program tpm.msc to check if TPM is enabled and what version it is. Below you can see for my motherboard TPM is enabled and is version 2.0.

There's starting to be a few posts around (these Win 10 and 11 forums) about users of otherwise non-comliant devices being offered ugrade to Win 11 ??

It's some kind of mistake/bug in WU. There have been numerous reports about this at "Windows news" sites -- e.g. Microsoft tries pushing Windows 11 upgrade to ineligible Windows 10 machines. Apparently, if you try to exercise this upgrade offer it will fail before you get to the post-GUI install phase (after first reboot).

Maybe it's a marketing thing. Offer it to people when it won't work - so they get a bit excited, then disappointed when it doesn't work - then think - hmm maybe I need a new computer.

A decidedly cynical but somehow quite convincing interpretation -- for conspiracy junkies, anyway. I'm pretty sure it's just a garden-variety screwup, based on 33 years of experience working with Windows (I came "on board" with the launch of Windows 3.0 in 1990). Sigh.

Are you sure you were not offered Windows 10 22h2.

Not so long ago - had a debate (back and forward) with someone who's running Windows 11 Pro on a 10 old CPU (i7-4500U). Feasible (been there done that), but supposedly - it's even capable of running with all the features (like Core Isolation - which didn't seem to work for me with an early build of W11 - but, maybe now it does... ). Here...

You don't need any "hacks" to update/install Windows 11 on unsupported CPUs (there's oficial guidelines released even my Microsoft on main site - as can be seen in above discussion). You don't even need TPM 2.0 officially - even tho i've seen TPM 2.0 on systems running a Ryzen 7 1800X. This one at least - it's only a 5 year old CPU. There's already people using Windows 11 with Ryzen 7 1800X - and it's supposedly rock solid. So hey, if it's not a business PC with some picky apps - you could give it a try. There's always the option to rollback to windows 10 - but at this point - this compatibility issues with 5 year old hardware sound more like a myth. Mainly "logical (thinking about it)" debates while taking the official info into account - not practical (experience based).
