Solved Why is 22H2 being offered?

Windows 11 23H2 (OS Build 22631.3296)
I updated from Win10 to Win11 last night, using the Installation Assistant. WinVer.exe shows I'm on "23H2".

And yet under "Windows Update" > "Advanced options" > "Optional updates", I'm being offered "Windows 11, 22H2". Why would this be? I shouldn't install this, should I?

It might be as simple as an update with a long name [cut off at the end] that applies to both 22H2 & 23H2.

All the best,

I don't understand what is going on here.

Sometimes the MS update servers get confused.
I would just checkmark the 22H2 box and let Windows Update, do it's thing.

It will probably, just disappear.
If for some strange reason it "downgrades" you to 22H2, (which I don't think is possible), you can just use the Enablement Package to get back to 23H2...

You hardware is definitely compatible with 23H2 and with the as yet released 24H2.

=====================================================================

I use WAU Manager to "hide" updates I don't want. Then I run Windows Update, to see what's left.

After running Windows Update, I will sometimes "see" the updates I hid... displayed in WU.
As I mentioned above... I just click on "download and install all", and in a few seconds to a few minutes... the updates I hid... just disappear.
I think it's just because the MS Update servers just take a few minutes to react.
They are "serving" a lot of updates... all the time, to millions of people. So I guess they bog down sometimes.

I use WAU Manager to "hide" updates I don't want.

Is this the tool you're referring to? I've been nagged by this damned KB4023057 [Edit: Sorry, typo] KB5034441 update for seemingly ages and I'm really sick of seeing it and its failures. It shouldn't even have been offered to me, as I don't have a recovery volume. And now it's followed me from Win10 to Win11, even though (as mentioned above), the update literally says it's for "Windows 10".

I've tried the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter, but it doesn't work. It simply immediately says "Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem" without offering the ability to hide anything. There is of course a note in the tool saying that troubleshooters will be retired...

Yes, that's the tool I'm referring to.

As for KB4023057... don't hide that one!
That a necessary, recurring update.
MS changes what's IN the update, but doesn't change the KB number.

KB4023057 pops up every month or two and has been doing so since February 2021.
Just let it do it's thing. It's "healthier" that way. :-)

That's the first mention in this thread of that pretty useless update [which has been re-issued for Windows 10 about every year for ages].

I did not know the same KB number was used for its Windows 11 equivalent.

Mike,

Are you saying that the same KB number is used for this thing in Windows 11?

Denis

Yes. MS keeps updating KB4023057, but doesn't change the KB number.
This has been happening on Win 10 and Win 11 since Feb 2021.

You can check your update history to see that.
This was also mentioned a few times on Ten Forums.

Go figure. :D

Supposedly, it's to keep Microsoft Update Health Tools... updated.
Which is to keep Windows Update... updated.
Sort of like the Servicing Stack Updates of old.
Even though SSU are still used as well.

@STRESSED

I also use this tutorial to prevent (disable), MS from messing up my installed drivers. :-)

Right -- sorry, I glanced at WU and just mindlessly typed the KB number I saw. I thought and intended to refer to KB5034441, which was definitely showing earlier.

And now, the optional "22H2" update I created this thread for isn't showing anymore.

I'm starting to lose my mind with this.

I got KB5033057 on Win11 back in early Dec., shortly after setting up this new Notebook. KB5034441 is only for Win10 and has caused issues there.

KB5034441
KB5034441 is the Recovery partition update.
I removed all my Recovery partitions [10 & 11] so I do not need KB5034441 [which is what MS also say in the KB article]. I did not know the same KB number applied to Win11 aswell.

Mike - I know about the KB4023057 update but wanted to get confirmation that the same KB number is also used in Win11. Thanks for that. I used to bother blocking that useless update but eventually decided it was so useless that there was no point bothering [it is one of only two updates that has made it past my metered network settings].

All the best,
Denis

Right -- sorry, I glanced at WU and just mindlessly typed the KB number I saw. I thought and intended to refer to KB5034441, which was definitely showing earlier.

And now, the optional "22H2" update I created this thread for isn't showing anymore.

I'm starting to lose my mind with this.

That's what I meant above... when the MS server catches up to wth is going on... those mystery updates... just disappear.

KB5034441 is the Recovery partition update.
I removed all my Recovery partitions [10 & 11] so I do not need KB5034441 [which is what MS also say in the KB article]. I did not know the same KB number applied to Win11 aswell.

I don't think it does. As shown in the screenshot I posted earlier, the update literally said it was for "Windows 10". I think it was just a holdover from when I was still on Win10 last night, and, as stated, WU just had to find its brains. It's gone now.

I think everything is finally copacetic.

Until next time, anyway.
