That's is the minor issue I see with a budgeted upgrade. There's not a lot to suggest. Go with 3800 then.

Then you should probably get a 3700X. It's only 65W TDP.
The 3800X is 105W.

The 3800X is a tweener chip. It's approx. the same speed as the lower wattage 3700X, but not as fast as the 3900X which is also 105W.

Compare the 3700X, 3800X and 3900X, and you'll see what I mean.
The 3800X is like... the red headed step child, of the bunch.

The 3900X IS worth the cost and the wattage. (12 cores)
The 3800X really isn't worth the extra 40W TDP. You'll need better cooling.

I have the feeling, that AMD had a bunch of 3700X chips than ran hotter (and needed more voltage), than the other 3700X chips, so they called them 3800X.

I have the feeling, that AMD had a bunch of 3700X chips than ran hotter, than the other 3700X chips, so they called them 3800X.

I can opt for an AIO cooler for the rig and that will help out with cooling. I can get this for around 80 bucks.

Now, if you are considering the 3700X, I think budget-wise, the Ryzen 5 5600X is the better choice for you. It is almost the same performance at better price.

The only issue is I would have to get a new MB and that's out of my budge range. I can get the 3800X and a AIO cooler so it's going to stay cool. My plan as of now is to get an AIO in Nov.. install it and then get the CPU in Feb.

The 3800 is faster than the 3600 only for applications that can exploit the extra cores.

When upgrading, step carefully onto the slippery slope, or your budget will be shot to hell. (Two cliches in one sentence.)

That's what I expect but it's not much more so why not get the 3800. If the price is that much more than it is now I'll opt for the 3600

Yes,you should upgrade that MB.I would suggest going with a B550 instead.You get the benefit of PCIe gen4 speed,the chipset runs cooler so it doesn't need a fan and is half the price vs X570.I can't speak for ASUS but I have the MSI MPG B550 gaming carbon wifi running my R9 3900x for about 1 1/2 years and I couldn't be happier.It's built solid with great VRM and cooling.It seems to be manufactured to very tight tolerances because,unlike others I have built/repaired over the last 20 years,it went together so easy and yet fit so snug.It stays together as it's supposed to and comes apart easily should the need arise.

As for a CPU upgrade,my 3900x doesn't even break a sweat when gaming,while my RTX2070 super is maxed out.While you won't be disappointed with a 3000 series chip which will last you for years,I would suggest you get the 5000 series for the higher IPC and also future proofing.The 5800x would be my choice as far as bang for the buck.At about $400-$450,I would grab one myself if I hadn't just built this rig last year.

The only issue is that kind of change is out of the range of my budge or what I would want to spend. My current MB will accept the 3800X and it works fine. And If I got a new MB I would likely rebuild the entire rig and that's not what I really want to do.

The PCI-E 4.0 bit is helpful if you have PCI-E 4.0 devices. Like an M.2 NVME SSD. Maybe with a PCI-E 4.0 graphics card, if you have to run it at X8 due to a shortage of lanes.

A PCI-E 4.0 X4 SSD is more expensive than a PCI-E 3.0 one.

Your graphics card is PCI-E 3.0.

I suggest that you avoid letting forumites spend your money for you. Spending money on marginal upgrades can be wasteful.

Your upgrade idea is good enough that spending a lot more money may not buy you much better performance.

The forthcoming generation of AMD CPUs are reported to need a new socket. No upgrades without a new motherboard. I don't recall whether DDR5 RAM will be mandatory as well. Future proofing is impractical at the moment.

That's what I'm thinking. I would have to match parts a lot better and make sure all of them will be the best to optimize the performance of the PC. I don't want to do that for marginal gains. From what I've read here the upgrade to the 30800X will be a huge change from what I have currently.

If I want to do a full upgrade that will have to wait for some time

Whichever CPU you decide to grab (3600/3700/3800 most likely and most sensible in this case), make sure you're on the latest BIOS for your current MB.

Compared to your current R3 your computer will fly nevertheless and latest BIOS will ensure a smooth ride.

According to "BunnyJ" (post 11), he already has the latest BIOS, which should be version 5606. That would support any of the Ryzen 3XX0 CPUs.
