OneDrive: Still the elephant in the room.

The trick is to do a clean install of Windows, (no internet connection), with just a local account.

How? I was informed (by MS) that I needed to...prepare a thumb drive, log in using my Microsoft account, ya da ya da...install Win10...my account would ensure that Win10 was the Pro version...

By the way: Is there a way I can respond directly to that portion of this thread in which you voiced the above quote?

Yeah... just highlight any part of what I said, and a tiny fly-out will pop open. Just choose quote.
When you quote someone, or put an @ in front of their account name, it lights up the little bell... top right.

MS will hate me for this, but.... You don't even need to get Windows xx from Microsoft. It's readily available elsewhere, without all the MS BS.
Then using Rufus to burn the ISO to a flash drive, gets rid of all the Compatibility BS. Finally you can have a really sweet version of Windows to install and enjoy without any MS entanglements. Any time I can take MS out of the game, it's a good day for me!

One Drive fan boy, answer me this: Where is it? Who administers it? Does he/she have a Security Clearance, or are they just out of Prison?
I've been concerned about data security for 40 years, and sending data off to an anonymous location, under control of an anonymous administrator, just flies in the face of Data Security. Almost like putting it on a disk or flash drive and then handing it to some stranger on the street to keep it for you. GET REAL!!!

Except for topics like this and a dead link in Account section - i almost forgot OneDrive exists. Removed it shortly after installing Windows - and reseted all libraries/folders to their Classic Location. And poof, OneDrive became a short thing of the past. Windows doesn't require OneDrive to work, it's simply an optional feature which was set to work like that by default. Once you disable it and remove it from Windows - works just fine without it (as if it was never implemented). The steps involved - are part of Windows settings to - it's not like you Crack (change some windows files - at incremental level) Windows to work without it.

Some of those who used it - abused it. After all "that was free space - that's maintained at an enterprise level" - so enough people used it as a portable storage unit - taking up the space even of dozens of Petabyte per account - since OneDrive was released. Thus, limitations were to be expected. To be fair - it's still cheap, the same user - still use it with a paid subscription of 120$/Year.

I like OneDrive, my family uses it on my M365 Family account (except Dad, who as an Apple user refuses to use any MS products!)
I have my save locations set to the OneDrive folder, so everything gets synced every time I add/change a file. I also have a shared folder for family members to add files to.

For Dad I have to have Dropbox installed just for him!
I make local backups of the OneDrive folder as well

Very true.

With my subscription to Microsoft 365, I can put it on all my computers and have a couple left over . . . I'm wondering if I get the 1 TB for each computer, or just for my two IDs . . . Wynona here (on one) and my real ID on the others.

Just the two. Not that I need the space, though. I have never been able to fill up one 500 GB drive, much less a whole terabyte!

A Microsoft 365 subscription gives you one terabyte of space on each device that you run OneDrive on.
I've had OneDrive since it's inception and I've never gone over 300GB of used space. At this rate, my one terabyte of space will certainly last me the rest of my life.

Windows 8 had a system called place holders which was effectively Files on Demand.

When Windows 10 first came out, it did not have FOD and this caused a lot of grief for tablet users, low capacity drive e.g. emmc drives.

You could get round it by mapping online onedrive folder as a network folder but it was a bit clunky.

In the end, imo FOD is great but you do not have to use it.

Most whingjng about onedrive come from people who do not take the effort to learn how to use it effectively.

Patronising? Not really - I had no idea how FOD work but experimented with a few dummy files until I got hang of it (maybe 1-2 hrs effort).

I sometimes think it takes some people longer to complain about features than to actually try it lol.

I have 1114GB, the 1TB of OneDrive from M365 and some extra I was given for camera roll or something. I've used 365GB (32%) as I have all my documents, pictures and music synced

I would like to say thank you to all those who gave constructive discussion, instructions, comments, both pro and con, etc. on the subject of Microsoft OneDrive. Yep, even "con" can be constructive if presented in the correct way.

I can now totally understand why one would wish to use OneDrive as well as why one would not wish to use OneDrive.

And now, on to @Brink's tutorial for the practical OneDrive instructions.

I don't think that I was always like this, but after 40+ years in the computer service business, and seeing countless data losses, I guess I'm hardened.
Over the years, I've seen old ladies sit down and cry like babies when I had to tell them that their years of saved pictures, etc., were GONE due to a crashed hard drive. Just a simple backup to a CD or Flash Drive could have prevented that.

I've set up countless data backup systems, for home PC users, businesses, a Corporate HQ, and one Bank. I was also in charge of doing daily data backups for my county IT Department. I was their Mainframes' key operator at the time.

I'm just used to the idea of being able to reach out and touch my Data Backups. The thought of my data files being off in an anonymous "cloud" somewhere gives me hives!

I'm sorry if anyone has taken my personal opinions as insulting. No insult was meant.
