I still think it's a kinda dumb thing to do. I know it's just releasing now or in a few hours, but I do want to see support for more 7th gen and maybe 6 gen cores. I'm like one gen away from 7th gen.

I know I could also use the iso but I'm cautious due to recent updates and rumors about win 11 preventing updates on unsupported hardware so I'm a little worried really.

You will still have access to Win10 for four more years.

99.99% unlikely to be offered/issued to 6th gen/7th gen Intel users thru WU

use either the W11 MCT or manually run setup from a Win11 ISO and try to install on those older systems

I had a 6th gen i7 laptop and it ran Win 11 without any problems. Not wanting any problems I did a clean install of Win 10 and donated to my wife's niece. I was going to give it to my son but he didn't want it.

From what I understand, MS won't "prevent" updates. They will stop automatic updates on unsupported hardware.
But with a great site like ElevenForum, you can just download the updates from here.

You do know there are bypass work-arounds right? Windows 11 has been tested on a wide variety of CPU's going back to Core 2 Duo mobile, with no ill effects. Runs perfectly. If you want to run it, look into using a custom install method. I'd be happy to walk you through it if you'd like.

No. The practice on the family of 'Our Sites' (links to Seven, Eight, Ten Forums , etc. are at the bottom of this page) has always been to have a news item for each CU as soon as it's released, which includes download links for the standalone update package from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

For example, here's the one for the latest preview update for Windows 10, scroll down and you'll see the download lnks.

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

While of course Windows 11 CAN run on older processors if MS wanted to, the problem is that these cpu's are apparently less secure in some way, that Microsoft doesn't seem willing to share the reasons for. It's likely there's some NDA with Intel and AMD.

So the question is, given Windows 11's focus on security, does MS want to throw away that security for more older hardware compatibility?

If given a choice to either try to manually find all of my updates or stay with Windows 10, it's a no brainer. I'm still going to be surprised if MS leaves unsupported hardware vulnerable. That's just egg on their face, even if it's on an unsupported chip.

Well, it's no more vulnerable than today. At some point there's only so much a certain level of security can handle.

Locks on your doors are great, but if you want more security you'll have to install reinforced door frames, steel security doors, tempered glass windows, etc... This is the equivalent of upgrading the base platform. If they let old hardware in, then what was the point?

Ghot,

That's encouraging. Is there an MS article that says they will merely block automatic updates or are you just reading between the lines of, say, the Windows 11 download page where they use the word entitled?

MS said:
WARNING:... If you proceed with installing Windows 11 on a PC that does not meet the requirements, that PC will no longer be supported and won't be entitled to receive updates. …

All the best,
Denis

As an aide to anyone who Microsoft decides are not getting updates there is the Microsoft Update catalogue.

All official updates will be announced on here on elevenforum.com and a search on the catalogue should find a download for manual install

While of course Windows 11 CAN run on older processors if MS wanted to, the problem is that these cpu's are apparently less secure in some way, that Microsoft doesn't seem willing to share the reasons for. It's likely there's some NDA with Intel and AMD.

So the question is, given Windows 11's focus on security, does MS want to throw away that security for more older hardware compatibility?
the way I understand the Security aspect of the compatibility of processors is the Spectre/ Meltdown group of malware, originally Microsoft used a piece of temporary coding to correct the faults in the Processor code, this was inefficient and slowed down the OS but did protect the OS Users. Intel and AMD both changed the architecture of their processors to make the malware useless, this happened with the final release of Gen 7 Processors and all of the Gen8 and later Processors (AMD was done by the 2nd Gen Rysen).

Windows 11 has been designed to rely on the code in the later architecture to protect from this group of malware rather than the emergency code used in Windows 10.

This means that apart from the later processors classed as Compatible with Windows 11, running Windows 11 on the older Processors would leave systems open to attack by the Spectre group of Malware. Now I'm certain that by now the better Anti Malware products will give some protection but some risk will still be present as the fault is still present at the processor level

As far as i recall for these vulnerabilities, they can also be fixed through BIOS updates. From what I heard, some manufactors even actually supplied BIOS updates that would fix these vulnerabilities. I checked with my 6th gen processor and the checker told me that I am secure from both malwares. So in theory it should've been compatible with Windows 11. But it isn't.

Apparently there's a deeper reason to it...
