Optional update setting "On" but dimmed out!

Windows update setting for "Get the latest updates as soon as they're available" is set to the "On" position, but it is dimmed out. I have tried all Brink's suggestions and none have resolved the issue. Any other solutions?

If you did Option Four... it will grey out the toggle in Settings.
Mine looks like this, and my toggle isn't greyed out...

Please post a screen shot of this location in your registry.
Then I can show you which items on the right, that you need to delete.

Or you could just delete these (right side items), from that registry location...
Just right click each one and choose: Delete

AllowOptionalContent=dword:00000001
SetAllowOptionalContent=dword:00000001


You'll probably need to reboot, to apply the changes.

Setting some of the update policies will grey out that option. The button will be stuck at 'on' or 'off', whatever it was set to before you put the policy in place. Setting a target release version will do it...

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

Okay, so if I understand the solution correctly, I need to go to the registry and find the entry highlighted in your screen shot and enter my version, which is 24H2, is that correct?

No. You delete those three items.
Leave the Default entry.

This is why we asked for a screen shot of that location in your registry.
As it is now... we're "guessing" what's in your registry at that location.

Update to my post...I changed the setting to 25H2 and rebooted. After the reboot and when I checked the setting it was still dimmed out, but the computer immediately downloaded the 25H2 update. I have now rebooted a couple of times and the setting is still dimmed out.

Attached is a screenshot. I didn't actually delete the entries I changed the value to "0" which I believe disables them. I had the screenshot before but forgot to attach it.

Right click and delete each of the items in the RED boxes, and reboot the computer.
THEN, the toggle will no longer be greyed out.

If you're at all worried... on the left side... right click and choose Export for the WindowsUpdate key.
Save it to your desktop.
Then if later on, you want those right side entries back, you can just double click to Import the key you Exported.

Go back to that tutorial, and undo whatever registry changes you made... besides the ones I already mentioned.

Well, as long as ANY Policies reg keys are defined for a Windows feature, Settings will display "Managed by my organization" and grey out your options.

It does not want override any policy settings (because it doesn't know if you own a personal PC, or work for a company or organization that has IT admins that remotely manage PC's). Either you run with no reg settings that involve a Policy, or learn to manage Windows Update using nothing but reg settings.
