So if I do connect to the internet, as I understand thew words on the page, I conclude that when WU runs, it's going to install 24H2 and that places use of my most used application in jeopardy.

Right, if you don't disable Windows Updates, then you get Windows Updates.

Having the latest driver Windows Update is satisfied and shouldn't try to replace it. That's what I do with my nVidia graphics drivers. Since I already have the same or newer driver, Windows Update won't touch it.

Weird but it happens if the older driver is slightly different (not exactly for that hardware) and has a higher version number. In that case you just block it, there is nothing you can do. We did the same back in Windows 7 with the difference being it could be hidden (blocked) from Windows Update without using third-party utility.

The driver is exactly for that hardware. A quick search on the internet reveals that various many users with an Intel CPU that features Intel Iris Xe Graphics have been having this same exact problem for years. I wrote a fix. For me, the fix works. So far, it has survived every Windows update and every Intel Iris Xe Graphics driver update [from Intel Driver and Support Assistant / Intel Download Center webpage] on 24H2 since October last year.
