I wouldn''t as a matter of priniciple.

Hasleo is free for home users! You need a license for a business or enterprise. The website is a bit confusing!

You only pay if using the education or enterprise versions of Windows.

Yes most of the functions are in the free edition.

Home license adds a couple of things.

System/Disk/Partition Clone, Delta Clone; Preserves BitLocker Encryption after Restore, Restore/Clone an MBR disk to GPT or vice versa.

diskgenius free will do "system clone" ( os migration ) for example moving os to a different/larger disk

One Macrium Reflect X license and one bootable MRX USB SSD and I can back up and restore all my laptops.

But not for free.
NSS, but I'm suggesting it's much cheaper than buying multiple licenses. And the bootable rescue disk will work for a long time.

There is a compromise with any variant solution. In you case it appears that you are booting the rescue disk on each PC, which is a workable solution. But that is far less efficient or convenient than a scheduled backup task running unattended in each PC.

Scheduled backups are only useful for computers which are always on. My backups are as-and-when and always manual. Some laptops are only used occasionally, but I like to keep them and their backups up to date.

Did you miss the 'not' out?
I did indeed. Isn't it strange how you mentally fill in a missing word even when you think you have proof read something.

Many thanks for pointing that out.

Macrium sent me this today:

Dear Robert,

Our records indicate that you currently hold a legacy version license.
This means that your software continues to run, but it no longer receives updates, security patches, or technical support. This could expose your systems to security vulnerabilities over time.

The e-mail has this offer which is interesting:

1779395237292.webp

Since I only have one license, my price would be $24.99USD annually. I have to think about this. I'm loath to buy yet another subscription but this one is less painful than others.

Or pay 45 bucks once for lifetime updates.

Or use the free version. It is enough for some people. It does image backup/full/incremental/differential and delta restore

Free should be enough for most people as about the only difference is cloning but if your are imaging you do not need cloning.

I have been comparing Hasleo to Macrium X and with both set to medium compression Hasleo created an image that was 2GB smaller than macrium X.
Speed was identical on both creating or restoring images.

Though I could have used the Home FREE version,
I did purchase the Hasleo Backup Suite Home Family + Lifetime Free Upgrades $89.95
5 PCs / License, For home use only!

Who knows how long a software vendor will be around. Malwarebytes started selling Lifetime licenses back in 2007 and stopped selling them in 2014 but they still honor the lifetime license today for those that did buy it back then as long as you've kept all of your original receipts. If you bought a license back in 2007 for $24.95 and you're still using it you've gotten 19 years of service for your $25

Who knows what the future of Windows and Hardware will be a few years from now. Perhaps the Free version of Hasleo will no longer be available but perhaps they too (like Malwarebytes) will continue to honor Lifetime updates if things change so much that the older free versions no longer work.

Just today I helped setup a Full, Differential, and Incremental (incremental runs every hour) for a Home User, using the 100% Free version of the "Hasleo Backup Suite Free" software. Have tested restores and tested mounting and single file extractions from an incremental backup. So far it's working very well.

I've just updated to lasted Canary 29595.1000 and was trying some diskpart stuff out and then wanted to do a normal restore to the image I made a few hours ago using Macrium.

Whether this is something new or whether it is related to the diskpart stuff I don't know but the images are on a separate drive as normal.

Macrium run from within Windows sees the image and allows it to be selected but on the reboot and as soon as the restore starts it fails with an 'error 2' and 'Can't find the file path specified'

Thanks, I have followed that thread but this issue was that no matter what approach I tried I could not get a restore to run. Good news though, it was my fault in that having changed the disk structure I had to run the recovery from bootable media rather than from within Windows. In all the years it is the first time I have ever had to actually do that for real to get a restore to work.

Whether it has or not, it presents a good opportunity to subscribe to Macrium X and support a good, reliable software developer.

If you ignore the fact that some are wanting to stay away from Reflect X since Macrium killed their perpetual license and are forcing a subscription for Reflect X.

If you are someone who is not o.k. with the 'You will rent everything and own nothing*' mindset (like Macrium and Adobe), then this is not a very palatable option.

(And you might not think of Paramount as "... a good, reliable software developer" if you don't appreciate what they did...).

*- Yes, I know that you don't truly own licensed software. But close enough for the analogy.
