Some questions about Macrium Reflect

started using backup after a friend of mine was exposed to ransomware virus and lost her precious data as a result, wanted to use Acronis as it was recommended by people I know as a reliable program with great experience in the field of backup

But the program is terrible to use, and caused me very big slowness on My device and the very large number of processes it places in the task manager. and Difficulty uninstalling and more Issues...
In fact, I felt like I was installing an operating system inside my primary system and not just a backup program! Fortunately, I was in Trial it free for 30 days
i think I will make a separate topic about my very bad experience with it, as what I mentioned above is only a small part

after some search in web, found Macrium Reflect program and some other options, but I chose Macrium Reflect
program surprised me with the speed of installation and the very small number of operations compared to Acronis. It was so light that i did not feel the installation of a new program, while with Acronis the slowdown began immediately after installation!

Full backups were incredibly fast and worked without affecting system performance. My work never crashed during a backup, Differential backups are very fast and some incremental backups work in less than a minute
after this introduction, I have some questions and I think this is the best place to find answers

1: My device has BitLocker enabled by default, and I learned that backups are not encrypted, so I set a password consisting of approximately 12 characters and using the 128-bit encryption included in the program. Is it enough or is it better to encrypt the disk?

2: Automatic backup does not work. I think the protection and encryption of the backup copy is preventing it from doing so. How do I solve this?

3: Backups appear on the disk with a blurry appearance, as it appears in the image indicated by the red arrow. Has anyone encountered this?


4: What does the sign indicated by the red arrow mean?



These are some questions now. There may be other questions because I am now in trial mode, which I think will end with me purchasing the program because I like it very much so far

It means that Changed Block Tracker is enabled for this partition, read about it here:

That brings another question @Bree .

I do not do incremental backups. Only full system backups.

Should I keep Changed Block Tracker enabled - which I think is the default?

Congratulations on getting to Macrium Reflect, which I'd have to say is the best imaging software available, free or paid.
Your question # 1 - You can treat your BitLocker disk exactly like any unencrypted disc. Just image it as if it was not encrypted. I don't think there is any real benefit the normal consumer to encrypt the backup itself unless you work for the CIA or handle Confidential Top Secret documents that you'd get arrested for mishandling.

I have a Dell laptop that came with Bitlocker employed and I use Reflect without thinking about it, just back up your machine normally. Recently I have disengaged Bitlocker as I'm just a regular consumer user and realize I don't need anything on the machine to be encrypted.

Your question # 2 will probably disappear once you forget about encryption.

And question # 3, the thumbnail pictures look pretty normal, but that looks like that is all they are, they are just thumbnails of the file itself.

@starchase is not using Device Encryption. So what applies to him need not necessarily apply in your case.

If you are using encryption, you would be better off to add BitLocker Support when creating the Macrium Rescue Drive ( Win PE)

I use BitLocker on both of my computers as I'm mobile a good bit of the time. I make a daily Macrium Reflect image of my 1 Terabyte C: drive. It only takes about 5 minutes to do as I continue working. I back up to a Samsung 2TB T7 Shield portable SSD using one of my Thunderbolt 4 ports. I don't even think about BitLocker when using Macrium as the whole process is totally transparent.

Just to add that upgrading to the paid version gives you Image Guardian which protects the backup images from Ransomeware attack. Along with Incremental backups (backing up the changes since the last backup) & delta restore (restoring only the changes rather than the whole backup) are worth the cost imo.

Image Guardian is one of the reasons I have the paid version of Macrium Reflect. My data and photos are important enough to me that I cannot rely on only one backup method. My backup strategy uses 3 methods concurrently, one of which MUST be offsite.
1. Microsoft OneDrive
2. Microsoft File History
3. Macrium Reflect Images

CBT speeds up making Differential backups as well as Incrementals. If you never make either then it is of no benefit to you, it's not used when making a Full backup. If that's all you'll ever make then you might as well turn it off. I leave mine on because although I almost always make a new Full, I do occasionally find making an incremental useful.

Just to clarify my post, if I was unclear . . . @jumanji; I'm in the same boat as you, TraderGary, when I started making disk images on my wife's Dell I never gave Bitlocker a thought. My normal default image back ups just happened as did the restore. No dealing in any way with Bitlocker. After a couple years of backing up I saw the post on this forum about not really needing Bitlocker unless you need the security assurance as if you worked for the CIA or something.

I don't work for the CIA, but I still use BitLocker. I also use BitLocker on my backup SSD drives that I keep in my backpack when I'm traveling. If anyone were to try to look at them, they will be asked for a password before they can do anything with them. I love BitLocker security! I like that the BitLocker on the SSD drives is also transparent to me. After I log in to my computer, the drives automagically recognize the main BitLocker on my PC and work like a normal drive. The Microsoft boys have done BitLocker right! Gotta love it.

The experience so far is going very well and the program works without any performance impact
I use BitLocker to protect my laptop in case of theft and it also works with modern 12th generation processors and NVME SSDs in a way that doesn't make me feel it
I don't mind Image Guardian because I keep backups on an external hard drive in offline mode.
Delta restore is very important to me because it will save a lot of time restoring a full backup and re-encrypting it.
The program requires purchase (and it is worth it) because its basic functions will no longer be available and it is only available for restoring backups
