Overwhelmed - Macrium Reflect

Everyone always has the option to "write" their own backup or other software. Of course, that will likely involve some expense and a lot of time.
A few years ago, as a 'proof of concept' exercise, I cobbled together a viable 'imaging solution' from existing (non-Chinese) free software...

Well, I've just successfully backed up to a .vhdx file, then restored to another machine without the aid of any of the conventional imaging solutions (Chinese or otherwise).

The free backup tool I chose is supplied by Microsoft, it's SysInternals' Disk2vhd. A .vhdx file can be mounted as a virtual drive and explored, so individual files could be recovered, if needed.... It can use VSS so can be run from within a running Windows. .....Disk2vhd can be run from a bootable WinRE recovery USB, so offline backups can be done too.

For the restore I used MiniTool Partition Wizard. My rather elderly version 9.1 can also be run in WinRE (I guess newer versions can too apparently not unless you pay, see post #33)

MiniTool Solution Ltd. is a Canadian company.....

fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

There was a time when you paid for something it was lifetime.

Some of what I have.

Paid for Winrar in 2006 and get all upgrades to current versions no extra charge.

Paid for XYplorer in 2007 and get all upgrades to current versions no extra charge.

Paid for Minitool in 2017 and have lifetime upgrades no charge.
Well guess what software vendors finally realized that was not a viable business model.
Getting revenue on an initial sale, and then getting no revenue for 20+ years or more of ongoing support is not sustainable.
It works in the very beginning because they are selling into a virgin market, and every user is a paying user.
But after their sales start to reach saturation, new sales peak, but ongoing support costs keep going, but without the added revenue.
The subscription model is the only one that makes sense from a business perspective.

I just wish companies like Macrium would realise that a low subscription might get more customers. I don't want to keep adding subscriptions to my tight budget. For sure, $45 is not a lot, but I also subscribe to WaPo, NYT and The Times plus a few music streaming services and they all add up. My whole pension is spent every month and I look at the value or not of each and every subscription. I would happily pay $200 for a lifetime subscription to Macrium, but I am not going to tie in to $40 or $50 a year.

I was fortunate to have been a long-time user of Macrium Reflect and was grandfathered into my current low-priced subscription.

If the value of a subscription makes sense to me, I subscribe. I subscribe to Microsoft 365 for Office and 1TB of OneDrive. I have the photographer subscription to Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. I subscribe to YouTube Premium for ad free music and videos. I subscribe to Amazon Prime.

At my age I'm also fortunate to still have a nice income from trading.

I don't understand how people can actually believe that there is software that is actually 'free'.

Linux has entered the room and not charged a dime now for 35 years. Does it cost someone on the other end creating it time, money, and resources? Yes it does, but to the end user it does not cost a dime.

Linux is not a single company product like Windows or macOS. The Linux kernel is open source, and the source code is available for the public to view, study, modify, and redistribute under its license.

Most (not all) Linux distributions are built mostly or entirely from open-source software.

Linux is also heavily used on the server side. Public server statistics are hard to measure perfectly, because CDNs, proxies, shared hosting, cloud providers, containers, and appliances can hide what operating system is really behind a service. Even so, a reasonable ballpark is that roughly 60% or more of publicly measurable web-facing servers use Linux. A broader estimate for internet-facing server infrastructure is probably somewhere around 60% to 80%, depending on exactly what is being counted.

On desktops and laptops, Linux is much smaller but still significant. Traditional desktop Linux is roughly 3% of worldwide desktop/laptop web usage. If ChromeOS is counted because it is Linux-kernel-based, the combined number is roughly 4.5%.

Open source itself is enormous. There are millions of open-source packages and repositories, but most have small user bases. A reasonable estimate is that perhaps 25,000 to 75,000 actively maintained open-source projects have a plausible user base of 10,000 or more people or deployments.

Only a much smaller number have truly massive adoption. If we are talking about direct end-user applications with millions of users, the number may be closer to 50 to 150 major open-source applications. If we also count infrastructure projects, programming languages, libraries, databases, web servers, and software bundled into other products, the number of open-source projects with millions of users or deployments is likely much higher.

Examples of widely used open-source applications include:

7-Zip, VLC, Firefox, OBS Studio, Audacity, GIMP, Blender, LibreOffice, Notepad++, KeePass, and FileZilla.

These are not hobby toys. Many open-source projects are professional-quality programs that take enormous time, skill, testing, documentation, and maintenance. Some are maintained by companies, some by foundations, some by volunteers, and many by a mix of all three. The best open-source software can be every bit as serious and capable as commercial software.

DaVinci Resolve by Blackmagic Design is not open source. It is proprietary software, but the standard version is free for users. It is a massive professional-grade video editing, color grading, visual effects, motion graphics, and audio post-production suite. Many editors consider it a serious alternative to Adobe Premiere Pro, and some prefer it, especially for color grading and an all-in-one editing workflow.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a cost and selling software. But on the flip-side there is nothing wrong with using Open Source software if it meets your needs.

Open-source disk imaging tools do exist, but most are not direct replacements for Macrium Reflect, Hasleo Backup Suite, Acronis, or similar Windows imaging products. Tools such as Clonezilla and Rescuezilla can be useful, but they are primarily offline imaging tools. They normally require booting into a separate Linux-based environment, selecting source and destination disks carefully, and restoring from outside Windows

At this point there seems to be few options for most home users that are using Macrium Reflect 8.x
  1. Wait and hope that Microsoft and Macrium update the driver for 8.x
  2. Continue using Macrium 8x and ignore mounting images (backup and restore are still fully operational)
  3. Upgrade to a Macrium X subscription based offering
  4. Purchase another vendor program to handle daily backups or find one that is currently free

Option 5 - UK users of Reflect 8 who bought the software within 6 years have the option of taking Macrium to the UK Small Claims Court for compensation for not providing software of satisfactory quality within 6 years of purchase. That's my plan if they don't fix it soon. I do note though that you can moint the image in viBoot and copy files from the .vhdx file created.

As I said previously - for any of the "good stuff" e.g image browse, data backup etc you need to PAY !!!! the free edition is very limited.
So with plenty of disk space and a reasonably fast PC I simply just use file explorer to copy the vhdx file(s) to external HDD. To restore I boot up any W11 install media drive and get into command mode by repair system option and then simply use the Ms Dos command copy to copy the vhdx file back to the source disk.

If one has to re-install the bootloader it's easily done again - just use bcdboot. I've not needed to re-install the bootloader for recovery -- the only time so far I've needed it is when adding new windows builds to the disk I'm using for these.

I've now allocated a 512GB external SSD for these -a great thing also on vhdx / vhd files is you can run windows 100% from external devices without having to create "portable OS" and they update too. The boot menu gives you which OS to boot at boot time.

Data / archiving backup and recovery is another issue but everybody has different needs and that can't really be solved in a few short sentences.

@Steve C

Good luck with the court thing in the UK -- I gather the Court system there is clogged up until around the year 3400 !!!!

cheers

Exactly!

And there are plenty of alternatives for the freeloaders to use, rather than banging on about Macrium's commercial decisions.
Lets not conflate people who were using 'free' versions with those who purchased the paid version.

At least in my case, I paid for around 6 licenses plus a workstation version for Reflect 8.

And 'Free' versions were sometimes used as a way to get someone to try the software hoping that they might want to upgrade to the paid version for the additional features, better support, etc.

I might 'bang on' about Paramount's decisions, but I always purchased the paid versions and would have purchased Reflect X if it was available under the old licensing.

The subscription model is the only one that makes sense from a business perspective.
> have received by email an offer to trade in their v8 licence(s) for Reflect X at 50% off for life,

It's not clear to me if that's the case or not, but it could also just be a desire for more money and a steady revenue stream.

It seems to me that many companies did this with the belief that they had a virtual monopoly (I'm looking at you Adobe. And they definitely could have afforded to continue the old way if they had wanted to).

It's the same deal I took several years ago when X was first released. I traded in my 4-license version 8 package for a lifetime subscription for $49 annually.

I've had the Adobe Photographer subscription for many years and in all that time the price has remained the same. For me the value is there, I love using Photoshop and Lightroom, so I subscribe.

And once again, you are happy and price is apparently your main perspective.

(Kind of like the (tangentially related) way some car dealers steer their potential customers to only look at 'what can you afford' and not the actual cost.)

But personally, I find the whole concept objectionable. Including realizing that this is primarily for their benefit and not yours.

I had the same experience with Adobe Photoshop. The last one I bought was Photoshop 6 which amazingly still works today (Since my needs are simple it does all that I need).

I totally would also have continued to purchase upgrades if it was available without a subscription though.

In fact, I was about to when they announced their future was subscription only.

P.S.- And I almost forgot Mathcad. Same experience with somewhat expensive software going subscription only.

No, price is not my main perspective. My perspective is value for a fair price.

Obviously, you cannot tolerate the idea of subscriptions, and I have no problem with subscriptions if the value for me is there.

We see things differently. I simply put the subscriptions I want on autopay and enjoy using the software.

> No, price is not my main perspective. My perspective is value for a fair price.

Really only a nuanced distinction in the context of "concerned primarily about cost related aspects, including value'' verses 'the basic principle".

I never said you shouldn't be allowed to buy subscriptions if you want.

But I consider my annoyance at their actions at least equally valid. Especially when they took away my choice.
