Overwhelmed - Macrium Reflect

Price is still too high for what I need that type of software for. So long as the FREE version still keeps working I'm fine with it.
Me too. :crossed

I do have two Reflect X subscriptions, one was a launch offer of a 3-year subscription at no cost for trading in a newly purchased v8 perpetual licence. The other is 50% off a 1-year subscription for life for trading in another v8 licence. I also have (and still use) a 4-pack of v8 perpetual licences. But I have more machines than licences, so the rest run v8 Free.

I may change later, there's always Black Friday to keep an eye on.....

UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to lid hinges starting to break up this laptop has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    Info for 2021-2026:
fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. Older versions of Macrium Reflect and WinPE provide reliability, stability, and compatibility.
I am using Macrium Reflect v.8.0.7175 (BOOT ISO based on WinPE 2004 x64) to backup my Windows 10 21H2 LTSC and Windows 11 24H2 LTSC systems.
***
However, everyone can choose:
You can download WinPE packages with this Boot Agent v.8.
WinPE packages are based on these versions of Window:
pe11Dec24x64.zip (10.0.26100; Update 2025/12) based on Windows 11 24H2
pe11May23x64.zip
(10.0.22621) based on Windows 11 22H2
pe11x64.zip; pe11x86.zip
(10.0.22000) based on Windows 10/11 21H2
pe10_2004x64.zip
; pe10_2004x86.zip (10.0.19041) based on Windows 10 2004
pe10_1709x64.zip
; pe10_1709x86.zip (10.0.16299) based on Windows 10 1709
Anyone have a direct link to pe11Dec24x64.zip?

Looks like I missed the deadline and it is no longer available for download with the downloader for the program.

"The most important change is a new image mounting driver called mrimgmnt.sys, which Macrium says comes with enhanced security."

Probably why they broke the old one. One can only speculate.
The old driver works perfectly fine. MS banned it for containing a well-publicized security hole, which apparently never got fixed to MS’s satisfaction.

If you choose to ignore the driver’s vulnerability, then don’t blame MS if someone uses the exploit.

The fact that paid LTSC replaced the driver indicates Paramount’s more interested in a money grab, since they didn’t backport the driver to non-LTSC.

They back-ported the driver from Reflect X into Reflect LTSC.

Status:

The image mounting issue relates to Microsoft’s updated Vulnerable Driver Blocklist enforcement and impacts the psmounterex.sys driver. Macrium Reflect LTSC has been updated to use the same image mounting mechanism as Macrium Reflect X, which does not make use of the psmounterex.sys driver.

Planned obsolescence.

Macrium had previously remediated the associated vulnerability in 2023. However, Microsoft’s newer enforcement model now blocks affected implementations of the driver regardless of prior remediation status.
Seems to work just fine on Windows 10 which is what I'll be using for the foreseeable future.

I dunno if "Microsoft’s newer enforcement model now blocks affected implementations of the driver regardless of prior remediation status" is true.

The blocked drivers list is a set of file rules which can block a named driver, within a specific range of driver versions. This allows older versions of a driver to stay blocked, while allowing later versions of the same driver. psmounterex.sys versions up to 8.0.7760.0 are blocked.

That's higher than the Macrium product versions listed here:

Reflect X was kinda hard to uninstall using the Windows 11 ARM control panel as there was some misc. mr... files left over & the 3 .sys files stopped me from removing using normal tools.
The Laptop got considerably slower before I deleted 5 of the mr... files then it got back to around 75% speed.
Fast enough to install Hasbro & create a image.

This is a 10th generation Intel CPU XPS9700. Bios update 1.38.0 Release date:16 Apr 2026 has the 2023 certs but was pulled from the Dell website recently. 1.36.0 and before are still available though you cannot downgrade the bios to 1.35.0 or before due to restrictions coded into the hardware of the machine. Bios 1.36.0 is currently marked as latest as I'm viewing it on the Dell website now. Machine was purchased around mid 2020.

I'm not making this stuff up.

Not that it really matters to the home user. Secure boot is geared more for enterprise environments. I usually leave it off anyway. ;-)

Bios 1.36.0 is currently marked as latest as I'm viewing it on the Dell website now.....
I've looked at the support page for the XPS9700 Support for XPS 17 9700 | Drivers & Downloads | Dell US and you're right. There the highest bios version is 1.36.0.

So I looked another way, and found this. Apparently Dell only remove it from the list of drivers on the PC's support page. The 1.38 BIOS update's own page still exists, and it can still be downloaded from there.

When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

Always use Mcrium for backup/restore ...............accidentely had to use an AoMEI-backup ( my Macrium-backup was too old )........
This restore went perfectly , so ; a very good test , AoMEI is a good . reliable backupper also !
Have to check the difference in price , between Macrium and AoMEI ............. 🛠️

I've looked at the support page for the XPS9700 Support for XPS 17 9700 | Drivers & Downloads | Dell US and you're right. There the highest bios version is 1.36.0.
Yes that is the one

Important Information

- This BIOS contains the new 2023 Secure Boot Certificates.
- Once the BIOS is upgraded, you cannot downgrade the BIOS to version 1.35.0 or earlier. BIOS downgrades are restricted when there are security updates and important fixes with earlier versions that impact the functionality of the system.
- BIOS updates take no more than 5 minutes to be installed on your system. You can install the updates in the background while using the system.

It was removed from the download page so you would have to know what you were looking for at that point. If the machine was sold without the update applied the purchaser would not be aware.
They could be passing the site maintenance for this old system to underlings. :cautious:
