You don't need USB 3.2 drivers.

MCT, or Media Creation Tool, is a Microsoft application that creates installation media for Windows.

Select "Create Windows 11 Installation Media"

"If you want to perform a reinstall or clean install of Windows 11 on a new or used PC, use this option to download the media creation tool to make a bootable USB."

Or create a USB stick with Rufus:

Select "Download Windows 11 Disk Image (ISO) for x64 devices"

Insert your USB flash drive. In Rufus, select the ISO file you downloaded. Under Partition scheme, select the GPT option. The Target system and File system options will change automatically.
I did use Rufus; I also used WoeUSB and 2 others. This has been going on for a few, but today I bought a new SSD, and I thought this would just fix the problem.

I took the old one out and put the new one in, and that was the only SSD I had when installing Windows.

ChatGPT:

1. Try the USB stick in every rear port — especially USB 2.0

This solves most cases.

Important:
Your motherboard has very few true USB 2.0 ports (usually two black ones on the back).
Try only those first.

USB 3.x ports often cause this exact failure in Windows Setup.

2. Disable “USB Configuration → XHCI Hand-off” in BIOS

On many X670/B650/X870 boards, this setting breaks Windows setup.

BIOS → Advanced → USB Configuration → XHCI Hand-off = Disabled

Save & reboot → try install again.

3. Disable USB Legacy Support

Some firmwares try to emulate older USB behavior, which confuses the Windows installer.

BIOS → Advanced → USB → Legacy USB Support = Disabled

4. If using front-panel USB-C → DO NOT

Front USB-C on many AM5 boards is wired directly to chipset USB4/3.2 controllers Windows doesn’t support during install.

Always use rear USB ports only.

5. Update your BIOS to the newest version

ASRock X870 early BIOS versions have known USB instability.

If BIOS release notes mention “improve USB compatibility” or “Windows installation fix,” then this is exactly your problem.

6. Enable “CSM = Enabled” temporarily

Windows 11 normally requires UEFI, but enabling CSM sometimes causes the USB controller to switch mode and fixes the missing-driver error.

BIOS → Boot → CSM = Enabled

Try installer again.

(You can disable CSM after installation.)

7. Use a small USB stick (8–16 GB)

Large 64/128GB USBs sometimes cause intermittent read failures in Setup.

“Legacy USB Support” does NOT exist. Modern AM5 boards (X870, X670, B650) only use XHCI controllers. Windows 11 does not use legacy USB anyway.

I have an ASRock B650E Taichi Lite, and a clean install of Windows 11 completed successfully with the default BIOS settings after I updated to the latest BIOS version.

ChatGPT:

Check if the USB Controller Is the Problem (Simple Test)

When the Windows installer loads:

  1. Press Shift + F10 → Command Prompt
  2. Type:

diskpart
list volume

If:

  • The USB drive disappears → USB controller driver problem
  • The SSD is missing → same root cause — USB controller reset

This test almost always confirms the real issue.

ChatGPT:

If the USB stick previously contained:

  • a Linux installer
  • Ventoy
  • Rufus with multiple partitions
  • Etcher-flashed ISO images
  • EFI boot partitions from another OS

…then the USB may have hidden partitions or a non-standard partition table that can confuse the Windows installer or the Windows USB creation tool.

Running clean in DiskPart wipes all partitions, including hidden ones, and ensures the USB stick starts completely fresh.

To perform the operation, open Command Prompt as an administrator:

diskpart
list disk
select disk # (make sure this is the USB stick)
clean
exit

After cleaning the USB stick:

  • Use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to create a bootable Windows USB stick
    or
  • Use Rufus to write a bootable Windows USB stick from a Windows ISO

Check if Windows Setup can see your USB stick and SSD

Boot from a Windows 11 installation USB stick.

When you reach the "Select setup option" screen (see image below), press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt.

Alternatively, you can click Repair my PC > Next > Troubleshoot > Command Prompt.

Select setup option.webp

In the Command Prompt window, run the following commands:

diskpart
list volume
list disk

(The screenshot is from a virtual machine, so the USB stick appears as a DVD drive.)

Command Prompt.webp

What to look for:

- Your USB stick should appear in list volume.
- Your SSD should appear in list disk (even if it’s unallocated).

ChatGPT: If either one does not appear, or disappears later, Windows is having trouble with the USB controller, which is usually the cause of the installation problem.
