Techies who get borard and like to make changes base on how they you the system.. should probably talk to more users. I'm not sure if they do. I always go with the upgrade because I know they will eventually make it mandatory. There are a few nice bells and whistles and I'll get use to the changes but the task bar issues cuts into how people organize there day. Mouse over to the icon then this large field of windows opens (small - can really ready the type - and if you have 7 word does open, for example they all look the same. We are a pubishing company with writers and editors - and liked that feature in W 10.

lol, I never use the tasksbar for anything and barely even use the Start Menu. Same goes for the right click context menus.

Ever since Windows 8 got released, I've been learning to use kb shortcuts for everything. It's paying off now since I don't have to wonder after every major upgrade of Windows, "Where da heck did that thing go?!"

For weeks I could have been able to upgrade to Windows 11 but that changed recently to "we're checking for problems". Presumably this is blocking it:

Microsoft and Oracle have found a compatibility issue between VirtualBox and Windows 11, when Hyper-V or Windows Hypervisor is installed. You might be unable to start Virtual machines (VMs) and you might receive an error.

The article references an Oracle ticket to follow to check the status of the issue:

Ticket #20536 (closed defect: fixed)​

No VM will start on Windows 11 host => fixed in 6.1.28​


So Microsoft says it's broken and Oracle says it's fixed. I'm running 6.1.28...we'll see how long it takes for this to get resolved.

Can't see anything on the changelog for 6.1.28 and in 6.1.30 released this week it only mentions W10. Changelog-6.1 – Oracle VM VirtualBox​

Windows 2000 - again, loved it! Huge improvement over Windows 95.
Windows Me - was that really a new OS or a failed attempt to create something new?
Windows XP - another meh.
Windows Vista - again, was that really a new OS or a failed attempt?
Windows 7 - another great leap forward, loved it!
Windows 8 and especially 8.1 - probably the most horrid OS that Microsoft has ever produced! Hated it.
Windows 10 - a big improvement from Windows 7. A lot of people hated how MS rolled it out.
Windows 11 - not much more than a redesign of Windows 10, but I like the changes.

Just my humble opinion from foggy memories of OSes long, long ago. I was a beta tester for Windows 95 back when you had to have a second phone line because each new version of Windows 95 took about 12 hours to download via modem.

Never used 2000, ME or Vista, I thought XP was ok but agree on the others.

That is the one thing I've found to work well. All my apps, however long in the tooth, work just as they did in 10. Some thing in 11 I like (the Settings app), some thing I'm neutral about (Start menu: I had about 18 small tiles for my most used apps in 10, I now have the same apps as icons) and some of the extra click for context menus I dislike. My biggest bug-bear is the lack of drag and drop to an app running on the taskbar, but rumour has it that it may return.

On balance I like more in 11 than I dislike, so I'm keeping it. It's certainly been the most stable new release I've seen.

    fully 'Windows 11 ready' laptop. Windows 10 C: partition migrated from my old unsupported 'main machine' then upgraded to 11. A test migration ran Insider builds for 2 months. When 11 was released on 5th October 2021 it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update, 24H2 on 3rd October 2024 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 24H2, and 25H2 on 30th September 2025 through Windows Update by setting the Target Release Version for 25H2.

    UPDATE - 11 April 2026: due to mechanical deterioration this PC has been retired from active duty. The OS with all software and files has been migrated to my System Seven in 'Other systems' to carry on as my general purpose 'main machine'.

    I've now clean installed 25H2 and used Garlin's scripts to update Secure Boot to CA 2023 and revoke the PCA 2011 certificates. It's new role is to test secure boot issues.

    My SYSTEM SIX is a Dell Latitude 5550, Core Ultra 7 165H, 64GB RAM, 1TB NVMe SSD, supported device, Windows 11 Pro 24H2, Hyper-V host machine. Updated to 25H2 on 30th September 2025.

    My SYSTEM SEVEN is a Lenovo Thinkpad T580, Intel Core i7-8650U, 16GB RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD + 2nd 512GB NVMe SSD, a supported device for Windows 11. This is my current general purpose 'main machine'. The installed Windows 11 Home from my System One has been migrated to this machine.

I wish I could have categories for the start menu just as in 10. Other than that I like 11.
