I never believed it either. Still, I was surprised to see that this claim lasted so long without any apparent challenge to the contrary on the part of Microsoft.

My role is to teach my students how to get around in Windows 11.


And now, to your broader statement . . . For what it's worth, I don't have any real problems with Windows 11; I just don't like it that MS has depracated a lot of really good features.

Having worked with Microsoft betas since sometime around 1985 or so, I've seen all the rumors attributed to Microsoft, and there are some doozies.

If it was a subscription model then the cost of using Windows would be far more than the cost of buying a licence in my opinion so I'd have to vote no. I'd just stick with Windows 11 for as long as possible then look into options on how to install Windows 12 for, ahem, 'free'.

Not that I advocate piracy in any form but unless there was an option to purchase outright then I absolutely would not want to paying yet another monthly subscription on top of all the others I have.

Why bother? Just use Linux and a VM and you get the best of two worlds. They don't deserve EVEN the piracy attention going that route...

You would still have to pay for the license. In the terms, a VM and physical hardware are two separate entities and you have to buy a license for both, even if running on same physical machine.

Well I use my PC for games so Linux holds no appeal for me given how few games run on that operating system. If you want to play games on a PC then owning Windows is a must in my experience.

Most Windows games runs fine under Linux. Only games with heavy anti-cheat engines does NOT work on Linux, but Steam/Proton team is working on that too. Some Windows games even run better on Linux, even with the Proton translation layer in between, most games however run at about 80% of the speed compared to native Windows experience.

Sure, if you bought a retail license. OEM licenses aren't transferable according to MS lic.terms. Although there's a way...and MS isn't enforcing their own rules that strictly.

I’ve never had a drivers license. In the 80’s, lines like that, where I came from sometimes worked. Cops were to lazy too write it up. Now, I’ve been to court a few times and cops don’t have a sense of humour, either do Judges, apparently. 🙄
