Hi all,

I have an XPS 15 equipped with i7-12700H, 32.0 GB RAM, 1TB SSD NVMe and Nvidia RTX 3050Ti and I have been having subpar performances in games and video editing applications.

- When I work on Davinci Resolve (similar to Adobe Premiere), it cannot playback videos smoothly. When I start to edit, playback will freeze, drop frames, become unresponsive etc making it impossible to work. I'm not doing anything intensive, just basic, cut and editing, transitions, playback etc.

- I know it's not a gaming laptop but it can't run smoothly CSGO or Half Life Black Mesa (20 y/o game with slightly improved graphics) in low settings.

Here's the interesting part. Today I noticed that when I'm editing a video, my NVIDIA GPU doesn't show any sign of activity when I monitored performances. Then I launched a game to see and same, my NVIDIA GPU inactive when running a game
Below screenshot was taken in the middle of a game, shouldn't the below graph should show some sort of 3D activity when a game is running?

SFKSdmEu72.png

In Windows graphic settings I correctly set it up to use my NVIDIA GPU.

I also noticed that my monitors are being driven by the integrated GPU and I was wondering if this could be the source of the issue?
Even if it's not, I couldn't find a way to choose between my integrated GPU and NVDIA card in Nvidia control panel. Does anyone know where I could change this?

Would appreciate any insights you may have on this.

Thanks

For laptops especially, ensure that power settings are set to high performance, and check inside the nvdia app for anything power savings related.

Try updating the nvidia drivers.

Also depending on how the monitor is connected, it might not be able to use the nvidia card. I know for my laptop I need to use the hdmi port for full gpu power, instead of the usb c port.

A 3050ti is a bit on the lower end but you should definitely be able to play most games without too much issue. For example, I have a laptop 3050 (non TI) and I can run csgo 2 at 120fps and halo infinite between 80-120

Thanks, see I did some research before posting and I came across videos about this "Unable to initialize GPU" in Davinci. I never got this message but on the video you linked me, Davinci does say to ensure that the display is connected to the Nvidia graphic card.
As highlighted in OP, my monitors are all connected to my integrated GPU so I think solving this would be a good first step. How can I connect my monitors to my Nvidia GPU? In Nvidia control settings I don't see anything relevant

Sorry what's the pos?

I just switched this to Best Performance, it was set to Balanced performance. Let's see if it makes any difference.

- Any other relevant power settings somewhere else I should be checking?

- Nvidia drivers are up to date

- Good point regarding how monitors are connected. My XPS 15 has only USB-C ports. I'm using a USB-C to Display port cable from PC to Monitor 1 then daisy chain using a DisplayPort cable from monitor 1 to monitor 2.
Unsure if daisy chaining prevent my monitors to be driven by the dedicated GPU

- Thanks for sharing what you're getting with your 3050. Something is wrong with my system then because I get 30-40 fps with everything in low settings.

What does the nvidia control panel show? Can you add screenshots?

I would uninstall the nvidia driver and restart, then install the newest game ready driver from their site.

Thats because games are using the intel integrated instead of the nvidia

I think I found what was nerfing my computer.
Settings in Dell Power Manager was set to "Quiet"
As soon as I switched to Ultra performance, the fan kicked off, and Davinci became super snappy, playback, scrolling the timeline, cutting editing everything is smooth and snappy now! Launched Half life Black Mesa and locked 60 fps and it doesn't slow down after 5min. I'll have a go at CSGO later but it's looking promising. I think that was the culprit. The only downside the fans are super loud now.

Yes, I didn't watch your video because your post came across as low-effort and generic. You haven't bothered mentioning anything from OP and you linked me to a generic video about how to optimise Windows which seemed like a waste of my time.
I still haven't watched your video but I'm gonna go ahead and assume that it does not mention Dell Power Manager which is a Dell-specific software as your video seemed generic in nature. (Playing around with different settings I can see that Dell Power Manager overrides Windows performance settings)
On the off-chance your video mentions Dell Power Manager, well this would be a cue that you should work on your communication skills. If you answer a question without referring to the actual question, people will naturally assume that your answer is irrelevant.

Now, your 2nd message is cringe and borderline passive aggressive. You must have a fragile ego looking for recognition on the internet and getting annoyed when not acknowledged. Have a good one

Its all good mate, we've had a running spat for months about this type of thing and he just doesn't see it, you can lead a horse to water as they say.

Il also re iterate this, Im not saying there is 0 value in his videos/posts, he has helped a lot of people, ive seen it, His knowledge base is very good, Its the way its put across, robot like, links to videos like a robot. its un personal and screams pls sub and view my youtube. The channel is monetized i believe, This isn't to say hes making a killing off it, he isn't its peanuts. But none the less its part of the driving force behind the video pushing.

Will you take constructive criticism? Or is it a simple no youre doing it youre way and wont listen to youre viewers opinons? Like theres only a few things that really would go a long way in streamlining videos etc. Just make it personal man, If you can you type the solution quicker than it would be for someone to watch an 11 minute video, lets say it takes you 6 minutes to write, isnt that 5 minutes saved for both you making it and the viewer everytime its viewed? As i say, there is knowledge in the videos and they could absolutely be useful, Just change a few things and youre good man

I messed up what I typed, it will not let me edit my post .... so here: disable the pos.. unless you want it on standby... I opted for NO onboard VIDEO on my CPU for my latest build,, I got sick of the issue you describe.. (fixed my bad typing)** sorry if you read my screwed up message... I found that the onboard video caused more issues for me, that I didn't need that additional video..

As i say, there is knowledge in the videos and they could absolutely be useful, Just change a few things and youre good man
imho it also defeats the purpose of a forum. The whole point of a forum is to read the answer. If I wanted youtube videos I would go to youtube....

We have tons of tutorials here, you can search and link them to OP. You don't need to go to youtube for this. It's great that they are helping people, but I think the constant linking of youtube is a bit much.

Either way glad OP got it figured out. This thread can be closed.

I entirely agree like, But to save completely destroying someones way of helping, id be atleast a lot more happy with that than the current video specs, but no you're right, Plenty of tutorials here available. Some people do feel they learn more from video teaching as opposed to reading, so i do feel videos, at the right time and place of course, have value to those who prefer that method of learning. Just gonna take em x10 longer with his videos lol.

The constant linking is excessive hence my original gripes
Agreed
