Hello forum folk! I have no password on my tower as it's in my home office and I don't need that security. But every time Win11 sleeps, I press the space bar to bring it back up and I get that screen with pretty scenery, my face in a circle, and a button that says "Sign In". When I click the button, I'm back to where I was working just fine. But on my old Win7 machine, that was automatic; I don't want to have to move my hand to the mouse and click "Sign In" every time. Small, I know, but really annoying.

Is there some way to just make that screen go away so I'm right back into my work? If it works in 7, there must be a way in 11, right? (he said, knowing how often that isn't the case :-)
...
It works perfectly if the screen saver has kicked in...just not once it gets past that and the screen goes dark (I'm assuming that's "sleeping").
...
Please no instructions on disabling the need for a password...again, that's already a non-issue and what I keep finding when I try to google this. In fact, in the "Accounts/Sign-in" options, the option called "For improved security, only allow Winidows Hello sign-in..." is both turned off and grayed out.
...
It's just that annoying extra click. Wish it at least responded to hitting "enter" but it has to be a click, it seems. And I don't have facial recognition or fingerprint, so those aren't options.
...
Thank you very much!

Is there some way to just make that screen go away so I'm right back into my work?

Yes. You turn off 'Require Sign in on Wake'. For your tower system you need Option Three in this tutorial.

There is one small catch. As is noted in the tutorial.....

The If you've been away, when should Windows require you to sign in again? setting is only available if your account has a password.

So set a password for your account, set require sign in to 'Never', then set your password back to a blank password. The setting remains in effect, even if you can no longer see (or change) it once you are back to having no password..

I don't want to have to move my hand to the mouse and click "Sign In" every time. Small, I know, but really annoying.

I know, it bugs me too. So none of my machines with no password do it now - whether they are Win10 or Win 11.

Only the laptop I take out of the house with me has a password and a lock screen.

Thank you Bree. I don't know how to set up and unset up a password because BestBuy took care of doing all that and NOT setting up a password upon my request. So let me ask you this before considering that: Berton suggested just turning off "Sleep" mode and that does seem to work. It used to be that we wanted sleep mode so our hard drive wouldn't turn endlessly, but now it's all solid state. If the screen is off (and I've been told that's most of the energy on a computer for all that light), how valuable IS sleep mode anymore? Because if it's hardly costing me anything in electricity, his solution seems easy and effective if there isn't a good tech reason to use sleep.

Plus, I MAY (don't know yet) schedule something to run in the middle of the night with Windows Task Manager. If I do that, wouldn't sleep mode undermine my efforts?

I don't know how to set up and unset up a password
For a local account that's easy. Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options. Click on Password, then the Add button will appear.

Click Add, type a password and a hint, then click Next.

Now close Settings, open it again and the 'require sign in on wake-up' option will be there for you to set to 'Never'.

Once set you can remove the password the same way you set it. The Add button will now be named Change. You'll be asked for your current password, then you'll get to the screen above. To set a blank password just leave all the fields empty and click Next.

I appreciate the steps and may do that, much as I hate messing with system settings. But I'd also appreciate an answer to the question I asked if you know, in part because the scheduling question.

Yes, it would work. But sleep would use less power, the OS is still running while the screen is off. Also, turning off required sign in will also remove the need to click 'Sign in' when you first turn on the PC. If your account has no password it will sign in automatically and go straight to the desktop when you power up at the start of the day.
