Solved Post Clean install issues: OneDrive etc.

Hi,

Performed a clean install of W11 on my laptop. Installed all required apps, MS Off, drivers, cumulative updates (haven't backed up yet).

Am facing some issues:

1. Left the laptop and later saw desktop, documents (personal and professional) and pictures (3 items, not videos and music) synced and uploaded to One Drive. Any changes that I make get synced.... has One Drive synced with my MS account?

a. I had never synced earlier, how can I stop 3 being synced?
b. Is it possible to get the synced deleted from One Drive?
c. Is it wise to disable One Drive, if yes how?

2. Desktop icons, View > Show desptop icons, Align icons to grid, Auto arrange icons, Medium icons are checked and sort by > Icon type. But the icons look fairly large and with Small icons, tiny. Recommended Display settings > scaling is at 125%. Changing to 100% makes it a bit better....is it wise to decrease it? Desktop look ok but lot of strain while reading mails, browsing etc...…

3. Lock screen > changed Windows spotlight to picture, as per theme.

Hoping to hear from you experts.
Should I undo after the 1st full backup or before?

Really short answer... completely remove OneDrive from your computer.
All OneDrive is... is cloud backup. Use local hardware backup... it's far better, and far more private.

I agree and earlier was using both external drive and backup to local PC, never to One Drive.

Will removing One Drive delete the files, pics, loaded?

Should I remove it after the 1st full backup or before?

Any @Brink (Shawn's) guide on removing?

No, it shouldn't. Just check and see if the pic(s) are still on your computer somewhere.
Make a backup BEFORE you start tweaking.

Just use REVO Uninstaller.

I meant that removing One Drive will delete the documents, pics uploaded (contains personal patients and Research data etc.)?
I have them on my external drive.
Will do a backup before removing it.

I have no clue.
OneDrive is the very first thing I remove.

Onedrive is the last thing I would remove. I only uninstall it if I get issues, but reinstall again therafter.

Everybody has a different opinion of using Onedrive. To me, it is a vital part of my workflow, so I can access key data literally anywhere in world without lugging drives around.

A 2.5" SSD is 4" x 2.75" x 1/4" ...like a slightly oversized credit card.

Gotta wonder what MS's motivation is for offering free cloud storage. ^^

Probably for marketing. They're rich, they can afford to give it away.
Maybe.

I can also think of about 5 "other" reasons as well.

I find it to be easier to just turn off onedrive rather than deleting it, but it is the user's choice. Before turning off/deleting onedrive it's pertinent to point out that a user needs to verify that his user folders' location is not set to onedrive. (This is a result of missing one tiny choice during oobe setup) If it is, the default location of these folders must be changed to either their default location on C drive or to a data drive. See my post here on how to do it and also @Try3 post following mine.

I don't understand why people don't want to use OneDrive. If you're afraid of someone hacking into your OneDrive account, store any sensitive data into your Personal Vault. The data will be encrypted, and a password is required to open the vault. If you decide to delete OneDrive backup all your data to an external drive first. Something you should do even if you keep OneDrive. I'm not sure about how you would move your user folders back to your C:\ drive. I've only done it with my desktop folder and forget exactly how I did it.

With SSDs the size of credit cards, there's no "need" for OneDrive, or any cloud storage.
You can grab a 1TB 2.5" SSD for under $100... depending on company, under $50.

$70 for a 2TB.

Your User folders are probably moved to OneDrive and not on your C: drive. I know mine were. If they are you will have to move their location back to your computer. I've only moved my desktop folder from OneDrive back to my computer but I'm not sure how I did it.

I can only speak for myself. Two reasons, one...slow and sketchy internet and two... Why would I want to buy storage when I have my own nor do I want to use 365. I still use Onedrive for file sharing and anything I might need to access remotely, but I have too much data to put it all in the cloud.

Much easier to lose or have the drive stolen than it would be for my OneDrive. I also like that I have my cellphone setup to save my photos on the phone and backed up to OneDrive. It's just a case of personal choice.

So have your cellphone set up to save your data to an SSD in your pocket.

I remeber people saying "yeah, but smart phones are so easy to lose, drop, break, I'd rather have this desk phone instead".

Never said you had to put all your data on OneDrive. There are different ways to use OneDrive and you just mentioned one of them.

If people just said NO to the cloud, they'd already have phones with powered USB-C connectors, and a little doohickey to connect your phone to an SSD.

And they'd probably be making SSDs that only needed USB-C
