Solved Quarantined file - now no USB at all

Well, I have really done it this time...

Windows Defender flagged a file from BusDogx64 (A USB sniffer program I was using to read USB traffic). I am not using the program anymore and it has been uninstalled, but I guess it left some remnants. I quarantined the file and rebooted as I was told by Windows.

On reboot, no USB at all. No keyboard, no mouse, nothing. I now cannot get past my lock screen to reload what I can only assume are missing drivers. Here are the particulars:

1. Normal boot -> No USB whatsoever
2. BIOS -> USB fine until booting into Windows
3. I can boot from a USB stick -> USB works while I am in the USB boot
4. I can't get the machine to boot in safe mode
5. I can get to the repair console on a Windows install USB stick, but I don't know how to use it.

I need to find some way to reinstall my USB drivers using the Repair Console in Windows. Right now, I can't even get into Safe Boot. F8 stops working as soon as Windows loads because the keyboard stops.

Is there a way I can fix this without a reinstall? My last backup is corrupted and Macrium won't run anyway.

Don't you have a Macrium image backup to restore? Coz that's the main reason for image backups... when something suddenly gets messed up. Quick and painless.

If you can use the keyboard during boot see if you can get to the recovery mode,


Edit, was thinking of a laptop not Desktop so should be ok for you.

If you press RESET on your cxomputer (or force turn off using the power on/off button) 3-4 times you should see "Please wait...", Windows will attempt some startup repair and then give you the troubleshooting screen. From there select Advanced Startup options. The computer will restart and give you a list, select 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with network.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad it worked.

FYI if you ever need to go to advanced startup from boot, there's no need to power it on and off multiple times to get there. Just hold down the shift key during a normal boot and it will take you straight to recovery options.

Good to know. It wouldn't have worked in my case, but I will know now if anything weird ever happens again. Thanks!
