Isn't OneDrive provided by Microsoft and in the Cloud, stored somewhere not on the local computer? I don't use Cloud storage, have a NAS drive for the purpose, but then I have no need to access files when traveling.

No, as far as I know you don’t get to decide where OneDrive resides.

Onedrive resides in my trash bin, but if I were to re-install it I would let MS decide where to put it. I think there might be less problems with it that way.

If you were reinstalling OneDrive on a new computer, would you decide its location or default as selected by Microsoft???
I always do it, because by default OneDrive messes up my files, so I have a folder on a separate partition.
Once everything is setup, I unlink OneDrive and link it to my folder, no duplicates, no other problems.

One of the problems is that OneDrive by default stores files in cloud only, so it literally removes all my files, which I need for setup. It was pretty annoying when it happened for the first time, I had to wait for them to be downloaded and it kept repeating it.

A rather mix of opinions.
I have set Onedrive to my D: Drive where it adds a folder called Onedrive and another called Onedrive Temp on both my computers for at least 15 years without trouble till now.
Somehow I managed to combine D: Drive and my Desktop. If I dragged a file from D to Desktop it would make a Copy, now the file gets Moved.
Either MS has altered things or its my stupid mistake. NO need to guess who.
Thanks to all.

OneDrive files are stored in the cloud under your Microsoft account and are also copied to a local folder on your PC for those files you decide to keep local synchronised copies. These local files are under C:\Users\{user name}\OneDrive.

Yes you can move the default location of the onedrive folder. However, this will not move the default location of your desktop, documents, pictures, and videos folders if those folders are syncing to onedrive. If THAT is what you want to accomplish, another tutorial must be used.

Well I for one read your question as OneDrive Windows related system files because you mentioned nothing about a “OneDrive Folder”
After reading so many bizarre requests in here about reverse engineering installation methods and asking about moving Program Files onto a secondary drive Et Cetera, I wouldn’t have taken your post as alarming.

I have removed all Onedrive info and files as best I could. I then reinstalled MS OneDrive. This is where my problem starts.
I log on to my laptop with a Gmail account. I have a Onedrive account using a Hotmail account. I would like to use it as it gives me 25GB storage. Can you help an old man please????

I believe you have to log in to OneDrive with the same credentials that you use for your Microsoft Account. At least that’s how I believe it to work.

Is this what you’re doing? Not from your last post it would seem, no.

If you log into your Microsoft Account using your Gmail email, then use the same Gmail login (Microsoft Account Credentials) for Onedrive. See if that works.
OneDrive is linked to the Microsoft Account you are logged in to. The two are related.

I may be wrong, but it’s just my understanding and I welcome being corrected.

  • Single sign-on:
