General Rebuild Icon Cache in Windows 11

  • Staff
configuration_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to rebuild the icon cache to clear and reset it for your account in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

The icons that display for files in Windows are saved in an icon cache so they can be displayed quickly instead of having to manually scan and slowly load them each time.

The icon cache can sometimes become corrupted causing the icons of files to display incorrectly or distorted. When this happens, the icon cache needs to be deleted to reset and automatically recreate it.

Rebuilding the icon cache will not help with the following icon issues:
  • The icon of a shortcut not displaying properly due to the target source of the shortcut was moved or deleted. You may need to recreate a new shortcut directly from the source (ex: program's exe) file to replace it instead.
  • All icons for a specific file extension display the wrong icon. This may be due to setting the wrong association for what app to open the file type instead. If so, restoring the default association of the file extension will fix this issue.
  • Thumbnails of pictures, videos, and documents.

Contents

Option One

Refresh Icons using Command

1 Open Windows Terminal, and select either Windows PowerShell or Command Prompt.

2 Copy and paste the ie4uinit.exe -show command into Windows Terminal, and press Enter. (see screenshot below)

3 If the refresh doesn't sort the icons, you can try Option Two or Option Three.

ie4uinit.exe-show.png

Option Two

Rebuild Icon Cache using BAT file

1 Click/tap on the download button below to download the BAt file below.

Rebuild_Icon_Cache.bat

(Content of BAT file for reference)
Code:
@echo off
set iconcache=%localappdata%\IconCache.db
set iconcache_x=%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache*

echo.
echo The explorer process must be temporarily killed before deleting the IconCache.db file.
echo.
echo Please SAVE ALL OPEN WORK before continuing.
echo.
pause
echo.
If exist "%iconcache%" goto delete
echo.
echo The %localappdata%\IconCache.db file has already been deleted.
echo.
If exist "%iconcache_x%" goto delete
echo.
echo The %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\IconCache_*.db files have already been deleted.
echo.
exit /B

:delete
echo.
echo Attempting to delete IconCache.db files...
echo.
ie4uinit.exe -show
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
timeout /t 2 >nul
del /A /F /Q "%iconcache%"
del /A /F /Q "%iconcache_x%"
start explorer.exe

2 Save the BAT file to your desktop.

3 Save and close anything that you are working on before proceeding. The next steps will involve killing the explorer process while rebuilding the icon cache.

4 Unblock and run the BAT file.

5 Follow the instructions in the command prompt to rebuild the icon cache. (see screenshot below)

reset_icon_cache.png

6 If the icons are still not displaying properly after rebuilding the icon cache, then download and merge the .reg file for the .ico (ICO) option here to restore the default associations of .ico (icon) files in Windows.

Option Three

Rebuild Icon Cache in Command Prompt

1 Close and save anything that you are working on before proceeding. The next steps will involve killing the explorer process while rebuilding rebuild the icon cache.

2 Open Windows Terminal, and select Command Prompt.

3 Copy and paste each command below one at a time into Windows Terminal, and press Enter after each command.

ie4uinit.exe -show

taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F

DEL /A /Q "%localappdata%\IconCache.db"

DEL /A /F /Q "%localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache*"

4 If the icons are still not displaying properly after rebuilding the icon cache, then download and merge the .reg file for the .ico (ICO) option here to restore the default associations of .ico (icon) files in Windows.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Taskkill argument order is wrong, /F needs to be before /IM.

ERROR: Invalid argument/option - '/F'.
I prefer using tskill
tskill explorer <enter>
It does not not require arguments.

Edit: Found the answer: clearing icon cache is not effective for icons with thumbnails without doing this: Clear and Reset Thumbnail Cache in Windows 11 Tutorial

Original question:

None of the methods has worked for me, or at least not in a useful way. I see the updated icon in the list of choices when changing the icon of a shortcut, but when I actually choose the new icon and click okay, explorer just displays the old icon. I've restarted and deleted the cache all the ways mentioned in the top post and even some of the comments, but windows explorer won't use the updated icon outside of the icon chooser settings. I'm on version 22621.1555 of win 11.

ERROR: Invalid argument/option - '/F'.
I recreated this error in a Cmd window. It's due to a hidden UTF-8 character being picked up in the copy. If you paste and see what looks to be a trailing space, just backspace one character and it's fine.

@Brink The trailing byte sequence that gets copied is E2 80 8B. Maybe there's something there that can be cleaned up. The problem exists with all five code lines in Option 3.

Usually, you can click/tap on the command to have it automatically copied to the clipboard without the space getting added at the end.

I've noticed the space at the end happens if one double clicks on the command to highlight it, then copy and paste.

@Brink I was testing with some different icons and needed to refresh the icon cache to see the changes. I first tried your script and found that I was still seeing the old icons (even with a reboot). I then tried the reset icon cache option in Winaero Tweaker. Same problem, I then tried the this tool. Same problem.

However, the tool @abactuon recommended worked perfectly without even killing Explorer, but I also had success with nircmd shellrefresh. Since nircmd.exe is 45K and supported, whereas IconsRefresh.exe is 1178K (written in Go) and is abandoned, my vote goes to nircmd.

Just for a sanity check, I made a batch file that refreshes the icons reliably. The two key changes are the introduction of a 2 second delay after killing Explorer, and not checking existence. I also found that I only needed to delete files from one location. Here's the script:
Code:
taskkill /IM explorer.exe /F
timeout /t 2 >nul
del /A /F /Q %localappdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer\iconcache*.db
start explorer.exe

Update: I asked ChatGPT to write a C# program, using the Windows Shell API to do a full refresh. This is what it produced. Works for me.
Code:
using System;
using System.Runtime.InteropServices;

class Program
{
    [DllImport("shell32.dll", CharSet = CharSet.Auto, SetLastError = true)]
    public static extern void SHChangeNotify(int wEventId, int uFlags, IntPtr dwItem1, IntPtr dwItem2);

    static void Main()
    {
        SHChangeNotify(0x08000000, 0x1000, IntPtr.Zero, IntPtr.Zero);
    }
}

@Brink I tested your updated script. It still didn't work, but it works with this additional change:
Code:
del /A /F /Q "%iconcache%"
del /A /F /Q "%iconcache_x%"
Also, I think you can remove the system restart. I've never had to do that.
