Personalization Extract Icon from EXE and DLL Files in Windows 11

  • Staff
Search_file_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how to extract icons contained within EXE and DLL files, and save the icon as a ICO, BMP, or PNG file in Windows 10 and Windows 11.

You can install the free IconViewer app that uses a shell extension to add an Icons tab to the properties page of files (ex: EXE and DLL) that contain icons within them.

While you must be signed in as an administrator to install the IconViewer app, all users will have the Icons tab available in the properties page of files that contain icons.

Here's How:

1 If you haven't already, you will need to download and install IconViewer 3.02 x64 edition. (see screenshot below)

Extract_icon-1.png

2 Open File Explorer (Win+E).

3 Navigate to and right click on the EXE or DLL file you want to extract an icon from, and click/tap on Properties. (see screenshot below)

Some common icons used by Windows are included in the files below:

> C:\Windows\System32\imageres.dll
> C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll

Extract_icon-2.png

4 Perform the steps below to select the icon: (see screenshot below)
  1. Click/tap on the Icons tab.
  2. Select the icon image you want to extract.
  3. Under Device images, select the pixel size (ex: "256x256, 32-bit) you want to extract.
  4. Click/tap on the Save button.
Extract_icon-3.png

5 In the Save As dialog, navigate to where (ex: "Desktop") you want to save this icon file to. (see screenshot below step 6)

6 In the Save As dialog, select Icon (*.ico), Bitmap Image (*.bmp), or PNG image (*.png) in the Save as type drop menu for the file type you want to save this icon file as. (see screenshot below)

Extract_icon-4.png

7 Enter a File name you want for this icon file, and click/tap on Save. (see screenshot below)

Extract_icon-5.png

8 When finished, you can close the Properties window and File Explorer.

That's it,
Shawn Brink

Hello, :alien:

Sure it does. I use it all the time. What are you seeing instead?

You need to make sure you installed the x64 version of the program in W11.

In addition, only files that include an icon library will have an "Icons" tab available.

There is a little (freeware) portable program to extract icons from .dll and .exe files as well: IconsExtract.
It's rather old but still functions, even in W11.
That's the one I used and will use in future.

But it is interesting to see that there are other ways to extract icons! (y)

Thanks for that...
I also found this by NirSoft, (it's 64-bit), but I can't get the darned thing to work. Tried command-line and GUI.

I've been using a programme called Icon Snatcher since 2003 (at least, that's the date on the exe file I have). Still available but seems no updates - that doesn't matter, it works ok. It is a bit cumbersome though, as you have to open the programme then navigate to the exe/dll file you want to snatch from, then choose which icon to snatch and where to save it.

Brink's programme here, Icon Viewer, is more compact and simpler to use. So a utility I've used for over 20 years (and wasn't much interested in updating or changing because it worked ok) is now blown to dust. Just "other" click on the target file, pick and save.

This program is also good (plus you can create your own icons too) -- Icofx.
It's not free now but you can still get the last free version (still works on the latest version of DEV Insider build W11 Pro).
