On Windows 10, you could relocate pagefile to a secondary drive.

I have an nvme/optane drive as main C drive and nvme drive as secondary drive.

The Optane drive is really quite poor in terms of write resilience - down to 96% in just under a year as I was storing all my vhds in a partition, and they do a lot of writing. I moved then to secondary drive, and still at 100% for several months.

So, on Windows 11, I tried to move pagefile as well, but it comes up with an error message saying it has created a temporary pagefile (on C drive) due to a pagefile configuration issue. I tried various combos, and only time I do not get error message is if I have a pagefile on C drive.

So, it seems you cannot have no pagefile on C Drive with W11?

Thoughts?

You can do it. I have done it.
Choose: No page file for the C: drive, and despite the message, reboot the computer.

Then choose whatever drive you want and create a page file. Reboot again.
IF there is any pagefile.sys left on C: you can just delete it.

Note: I don't know if it matters... but when I create the pagefile on a different drive, I set min and max to the same size.

Pretty sure, I tried that but will double check - thanks.

I tried exactly this but it still does not work on my PC. I manually set pagefile to minimum 800 to avoid error message and 5200 on E drive but on reboot it gives this on left but setting is like on right, so I have no idea which is right.

EDIT: just double checked - no pagefile on E: drive - something is screwed up!

It works fine on W10 but not w11!

Now, go into File Explorer and just delete the pagefile.sys that's there. Leave the one on the E: drive untouched.

@cereberus

Another way to remove the page file from C: is to create the one on the other drive, reboot...
THEN in the Virtual Memory settings... highlight the C: drive and choose: No paging file.

Based upon cereberus's general knowledge level, plus the op, I think he is saying that he's done this numerous times - but his current system is being a bit of a PITA and not letting him do it the way it's always worked in the past.

Is it possible that there is some app you have installed that is forcing at least 800 MB of system restore on the main drive that you're unaware of? It would have to be a really weird program, or at least one that I haven't used in a while ever ... but stranger things have happened.

Perhaps an AV suite is being over zealous and not allowing it to be removed for whatever reason?

I don`t use a page file on W10 or W11, I`ve never had a issue. I stopped using a page file with W7 too, when I 1st started using small 120 to 128GB SSD`s
It all depends on how much memory you have.

I doubt that it is a memory issue, but may still be worth investigating.

The key here is that he cannot get that Drive C pagefile to go away, and it's worked plenty of times before for him.

I have done more testing. If I set C drive to 0 pagefile, and 5000 MB on secondary drive, when I reboot I get a temporary pagefile error. On googling, it seems that this is related to controllers. I have an optane nvme drive, and I think this kicks in before secondary drive controller and it complains. I just cannot set it to zero or no pagefile.

Best I can do is set it to minimum of 16 MB but then the secondary pagefile just does not seem to be active.

It sets up a temporary page file if I set C to 0.

Now with C set to minimum of 16 MB as below, it looks better, but looking closer, it only sees C drive.
Pagefile is only 16 MB 1648495683833.png
But no pagefile on E drive!

I am sure this is related to my optane drive!

Thoughts?
While it's useful to know how to move the page file, it's not necessary to worry about optane's write resilience. One of the whole points of optane is that write endurance (to use the more conventional term) is almost unlimited. Moving any amount of writes from an optane to flash will do much, much more damage to the flash-based drive than avoided on the optane.

For some context, a consumer-level high-end machine I've used to do some fairly I/O-heavy background processing for years also uses a 480gb Optane, and it claims 2'274'903GB writes (i.e. 2275TBW; TBW == total terabytes written) and 88% life remaining. That's a fairly huge amount of writes. For some context, the popular samsung 980 1TB has a warranty up to 600TBW; so I'm already almost 4x over that warranty, which is for a drive 2x as large!

The fact that you've managed to already use 4% of your Optane's warrantied TBW (assuming your drive scales TBW with life % like mine) implies that there is something unusually write-intensive running on your system. I've never seen any system do anything like that much writes without a very specific cause - again, your usage likely would be enough to completely burn through a 1TB Samsung 980's life expectancy in just 1 year!

Additionally, quoted TBW numbers are not strictly related to actual drive life expectancy. They're just related to warranty; i.e. the bare minimum to expect. There's a very good chance your drive will survive much longer than your warrantied TBW (both flash and optane). Furthermore, on flash SSDs, the drive life remaining is usually derived from actual P/E cycles, i.e. after wear-levelling does its work. But optane doesn't do wear levelling, so that drive life remaining is probably just a counter counting total writes. But to give you an idea of just how conservative those numbers are: I also have a a 1tb 850 pro with 770TBW, that has a warranty of 300TBW, but drive life remaining is still 87%! I also have an 840 evo, which doesn't explicitly state it's TBW warranty, but related drives seem to have 150TBW warranties, and that's actually written 547TBW and is still at 56% of drive life expectancy, despite being in near continual use for 8 years now.

But even using your numbers: you state drive life expectancy is down 4% in a year - but that means that drive will survive 25 more years under that load. You won't be keeping that machine for 25 years, right? So don't worry about it.

TL;DR: keep your pagefile on the optane drive, that's definitely the drive with the most endurance that you have. Also, don't worry too much about write endurance in general. Also, your machine is doing an abnormally large number of writes for you to be seeing that much load on your Optane, so definitely don't move writes to a flash-based drive, that will make things much more dangerous (not that you're likely in danger territory quite yet, but still). However, consider doing some diagnostics to figure out why your machine is writing this much.

Hi there
Doesn't seem to have an issue with vhdx physical files -- Shows C:\ as Boot and D:\ as Paging in Diskpart
Note my HDD has no standard Windows install. Everything is on vhdx files

Current Laptop with 1TB SSD (NVME) not optane though.

I have EFI(Fat32 100M), MSR (128M), 800GB NTFS, 200GB for Linux formatted XFS, 8GB Linux Swap.

the 800GB partition has a number of vhdx files all formatted ntfs (no separate efi partitions)
the XFS partition is for a Linux system (Root '/' and /home - user data) , and a final small Linux swap partition.

I'm not on Windows currently but I'll post image when next on.

Boot loader for all the windows systems and the Linux partition is in the single EFI partition.
At boot - can select any of the systems (including Linux) via the Windows boot menu mechanism - default is W11 Dev version, or from the Bios menu choose windows or linux -- I just usually go via the Windows menu.

Doesn't seem to be any problem on my laptop,

Just logged on to laptop :
