Remove UK keyboard

Windows 11 for Workstations
I have a lappie which has a US keyboard, but I live in the UK so have chosen UK regional settings.

Unfortunately W11 always selects the the UK keyboard layout and I have to select the US layout every time.

How to remove the UK keyboard (or force the US one to be the default). The old way of doing it using the Control Panel regional settings I understood, but this ghastly "Settings" thing - not so much.

This is the first reponse I get:


To set the US keyboard as the default layout in Windows 11 24H2, you'll need to adjust your language settings. Navigate to "Time & Language" in Settings, then "Language & Region". From there, you can select your desired language and then access advanced keyboard settings to override the default input method to the US keyboard.

  1. Open Windows Settings: Click the Start menu and select the Settings icon (gear icon).

  2. Navigate to Time & Language: Go to "Time & Language" in the left-hand menu.

  3. Go to Language & Region: Click on "Language & region".

  4. Select your language: Locate your preferred language (e.g., English) in the "Preferred languages" list and click on the options button next to it.

  5. Open Advanced Keyboard Settings: Click on "Advanced keyboard settings".

  6. Override default input method: In the "Override for default input method" dropdown, select the "United States - International" or "United States" keyboard layout.

  7. Save changes: The changes should be applied automatically, but you may need to restart the application you're using for the new layout to take effect.

But, I was able to add the US International Keyboard and then remove the UK English one ...

It's under Windows Settings > Time & Language > Typing (ms-settings:typing).

Alternatively, you could also just press the Windows logo key to open the Start menu, and type in advanced k. If you do that, Advanced Keyboard settings should show up instantly in the search result.

I almost forgot to mention, this is an advanced setting. So, please watch out that you don't change it to Voynichese on accident. Just kidding...

I have always used just one keyboard type (Danis/Nordic) since I got my first Windows desktop (win95) and never had any problem until a week or so ago when I found I couldn't type in apostrophes. I tried the #6 message directions, after faiing to get the taskbar icon to do anything, and now its OK again. I wonder what happened?
