I was having trouble with Windows 11 not booting. I fixed it by following the steps below. I have run a chkdsk and memtest86. Neither of the programs found any problems with my ram or HD. I would like to understand what the problem was. What else should I check to try to find the problems? I do not understand why my computer was giving me so much trouble.

These were the steps I followed.

====================================================================
The computer would not boot.
Then I tried a system restore.

====================================================================

Then the computer still would not boot.

Then my computer kept flip flopping between these two errors.

0xc0000098 BCD Error
0xc0000001 after multiple tries the operating system on your pc failed to start so it needs to be repaired

Then I tried all these commands.

  • bootrec /fixmbr
  • bootrec /fixboot (If "Access denied" occurs, type bootsect /nt60 sys and try again).
  • bootrec /rebuildbcd

Then these commands

diskpart, list disk, sel disk 0, list vol 0, fat32 partition, sel vol number of fat32 partition, list vol double check selected right volume, assign letter = v, exit, format v: /fs:fat32, bcdboot c:\windows /s v: /f uefi

Then these commands

sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows

Then these commands

dism /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /restorehealth

Then these commands

chkdsk C: /f /r

====================================================================

Then I tried a system restore.

Then the computer finally rebooted normally.

Diagnostics are very limited after system restore.

1) Search for Srttrail.txt (if found) > post a share link

c:\windows\system32\logfiles\srt\srttrail.txt

2) Search for CBS.log > post a share link

C:\windows\logs\CBS\CBS.log

3) Run chkdskfromevent.bat > post a share link

4) Run the V2 log collector > post a share link

Going forward:

Run:

1) tuneup_plus_log.bat > post a share link

2) Enable Regback:

3) Create a new system restore point:

4) Create free or pay backup images:

(Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, Hasleo, Macrium, Paragon, etc.)

Macrium is widely used in Ten Forums.

Possible misconception - chkdsk does not check physical disks.
As a matter of course you should check the SMART parameters (for all your disks if > 1) e.g. by using Crystal Diskinfo (free) - portable version available.

bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot (If "Access denied" occurs, type bootsect /nt60 sys and try again).

On legacy BIOS/MBR-based systems, bootrec /fixmbr and bootrec /fixboot update the Master Boot Record and the partition boot sector. In contrast, UEFI/GPT systems boot from the EFI system partition and do not use these sectors to initiate the boot process.

So, in this case, these commands were unnecessary.

bootrec /rebuildbcd

In this case, the bootrec /rebuildbcd command was redundant, since you later ran "bcdboot c:\windows /s v: /f uefi".

While bootrec /rebuildbcd only attempts to repair the BCD store, the bcdboot command recreates the BCD and restores all necessary boot files on the EFI system partition.
