I amazed that it's still there for people to use.
It's like leaving a trap for people.

A question to anyone who has ever used this old backup feature in Windows. If the backup is in .vhdx format, can't that backup be mounted on another computer so the the OP can recover his files? I am going by this info here. Open, Edit, and Convert VHDX Files

Yes. It is one of the advantages of the .vhdx format.

There are several ways. One way is to use diskgenius to clone each of the partitions from the vhdx image to the target disk, and then use bcdboot command to adjust the bcd entry.

not difficult.

For example to restore the image I just made to a completely different disk

first load the esp.vhdx and clone it to the new disk. OR alternatively can create a new esp partition and populate it with bcboot command after cloning the os partition.

load the big .vhdx and clone the os partition to the new disk ( and any others in order one at a time ).

and after that of course at cmd prompt:
bcdboot letter of cloned os partition:\windows /s esppartition

Another way ( if you haVe acces to diskmgmt ) is to mount the .vhdx files in diskmgt. Because they are mounted as physical, any program that can do cloning - even macrium can be used to clone those to a target disk.

I've never seen it on any of my clean installs of Windows 10/11 and am beginning to wonder ...
- is it still part of Win 10/11 where installation allows all the bells and whistles bloatware that 10/11 are famous for. My clean install technique is to unselect all the extras offered during the installation process (which I no longer to even bother to read, I just "unslide" the selector), despite the fact that MS lie about it being an incomplete installation, the threatening tone of the wording carrying the connotation that the installation won't work !!!!
- or is it a leftover legacy from earlier versions of Windows (7/8.x) which is kept with an in-situ upgrade ?

It's like a trap that they set for unsuspecting users.
It's really that bad.

I actually tried looking at a way that the backup could be used or restored in another way. And that's assuming that the backup is any good.
I don't think there is any easy way. But it'd be good to see someone prove me wrong.

Yeah, this is an area of Windows that i have always felt was really lacking.

This is an area where i think that Apple with MacOS has a major win. You connect an external drive, you go into time machine and pick your drive and it just backs it up, seamlessly and automatically. If you lose a file, you can easily restore from time machine. If you get a new Mac, you can easily restore your backup from Time Machine. It just works, and it's built it, and almost anybody can use it.

You're completely right about that.
The only question that I need to ask is this. Who'd want to restore a Mac anyway?

In all fairness though, there are lots of things that the Mac does exceptionally well. It fits the bill rather nicely for lots of people.

Nope, ain't gonna happen. Not worth their effort. So many alternatives available, both freeware and paid.

As someone once said in this forum (apologies, forgot who), Windows 11 is the best operating system so far ... in which to install 3rd party software.

- Macrium Reflect
- AOMEI Backupper

Backup in native file format
- SyncBackFree

All above have freeware versions, adequate for the everyday home user.

Many of us use, like and support Macrium Reflect.

They still offer a free version, which many of us have used, but their free model is going away in Jan of 2024. But you can still download the free version 8.x of the software (which is the latest version) and use it.

The normal cost of Macrium Reflect home is $69.95 for a single user, and $139.95 for a 4 pack license. That goes on sale a few times a year for 1/2 price. I've also seen it on same a few times for approx 30% off.

I suggest you try that and start with the free version and see how it works for you. If you like it, and hang around here, you will find out when it goes on sale and can then buy your license (if you want to). The license gives you support, incremental backups, and a few other small changes.
