It only tends to be social clubs or snooker halls that have snooker tables (some have full size pool tables as well).

Try playing pool on a full size table and you find you need to use more powerful shots.

I played in leagues, both APA and a smaller league, WPA, on regulation sized tables, for well over a decade. Includng snooker on a regulation sized snooker table, and 3 cushion on a regulation sized 3 cushion (no holes) table.

The bar tables are usually even smaller here in the US, usually around 6 to 6.5 feet, I'm talking the coin-op tables. I categorically refuse to play on those except every once in a blue moon when I am at a place that only has a bar table and friends cajole me to play.

I don't hang out in bars much, but rather, actual billiards halls, where the pool tables are more of a draw (and make more money) than the bar does, for the most part.

Upgrading through the app interface didn't work; I got 4.1xx. But a link to the site found 4.2 Portable, and it's always a treat upgrading Rufus, since all I have to do is replace the old .exe.

There is a problem with this new version. Or maybe it's the server.

If I download the latest version, I get Rufus version 4.2 (Build 2074).
But when I run Rufus version 4.2 (Build 2074), I get prompted to upgrade to Rufus version 4.2 (Build 2075).

Hmmm. On the downloads site (Index of /downloads) all that's shown is 4.2, and all of the versions of it are dated today.
I have run my portable version three times, and let it sit for a couple of minutes each time, but no update notice has appeared. Mind you, I'm using the portable, and the portable of 2075 may just not be available until tomorrow or so.
That's a guess, but I really don't think there's any difference between the regular and the portable, because you run the standard version when you've downloaded it. It doesn't really install. I just take the portable out of habit. All but four of the forty-one apps and utilities I run currently are portables (or just standalones that need no installation).

The default Rufus update check only checks once per day.
If you click the "Show application settings" button, then click "Check Now", you'll see if you get the Rufus version 4.2 (Build 2075) update prompt.

Thanks for that. I didn't know that. So, okay, I checked and it said 2075 was available, so on the assumption that if a new version was issued on the same day as its predecessor, there was something wrong with its predecessor, I tried the available link on the site. When I ran the file, it showed as version 2074. I'll try the download from the app now.

No dice. Downloaded both the portable from the site and the .exe through the app, and both show 2074 in the title bar. I'll check again tomorrow. Thanks for the heads up. Points above.

EDIT: BTW, I was right about the no diff thing as far as I can tell. The Standard exe and the portable exe are exactly the same file: same size, same details.

Same File Hash - without that, you don't know if it is the same or not. The file hash will tell you.

Yup, that's because Rufus determines whether it should run in portable or standard mode depending on whether there is a 'p' in the name of the executable, or if there exists a rufus.ini in the application directory. This is explained in the Rufus FAQ.

As to the reason why there was a prompt to download a non existing 2075 build, that was just because I briefly screwed up the version file from the website, which is what Rufus uses to look for updates, and inserted a wrong build number in there. Of course, I have since fixed that.

Errr, ummm, erm . . . This 86 YO (today's my 86th birthday) cut her teeth on DOS. She also learned to use the new Settings in Windows 10 and 11. After all, we were already around when DOS was being used.

In fact, I started out with a Tandy Color Computer and OS 9 (name copied by Apple) in the early 80s. BTW, once I had OS9 under my belt, it was easy to move to an IBM PC and DOS.

Age is just a number and there are plenty more out here the same age as I, sharper than I, and who can run circles around me in the technology field. So, don't sell all of us old farts short . . .
