That flag goes away while I am searching for a file. I guess that means it suspends itself when not in use. It looks like this.

Should be. FYI every windows update...it will turn back on so you gotta keep doing it.
I left it on for win11 but noticed issues that's the only reason i really changed it, wasn't suspending or anything. Mainly noticed it due to the fans cranking up whilst sitting at idle doing nothing and that was the culprit so I got rid. Doesnt cause me any drama and I dont have the issue. Thats not to say the issue might have been fixed since I had it but ima just rock this way now again

I leave it on, but I also go into the indexer options and turn off types of indexing and types of files and locations I won't need/ don't use. Currently my index database is about 33Mb in size and takes maybe 6 seconds to complete over 4 SSDs. Unless you need all the information about every file in every location then you can reduce the search indexer's overhead and impact by customising it.
There is also, or used to be on Win10 at least, a MS Store app (free) called Indexer Diagnostics that allowed you to see the impact of various indexer settings and set options.

Oh BTW the search that you have here isn't what was causing the issue for me, it was the search protocol process that came with it. The green flag and all that was there at the time, but it was search protocol that was using resources.

Yeah I wouldn't have an issue with that personally. In task manager not always but my issue was 'search protocol' not the 'search' one. Albeit search protocol comes with it. That's what was causing me high usage. I'm well over what you're ram usage is idle I can use anything up to 6 6 and half albeit I have keyboard software. Mouse software. Steering wheel software etc so ima say that's why but those are optionals so irrelevant in this case

That's how it looks with the Search service disabled. I have no idea why it got renamed from Search to Screen Snipping though.

Edit: on the second attempt, I got this

So apparently, the Snipping Tool is somehow entangled with Search, for no reason that I can understand.

Possibly because a new image would be created and would therefore need indexing....?
