General See Windows 11 Restart Time

  • Staff
Restart_Time_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how long it takes Windows 11 to restart and get back to the desktop.

It would be recommended to disable the delay of running startup apps below to get a more accurate restart time.

You can also view the startup logs in Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) in the Applications and Services Logs (takes a moment to load) > Microsoft > Windows > Diagnostics-Performance > Microsoft-Windows-Diagnostics-Performance/Operational log. The logs will be in the middle to show you what ran at startup, how long it took, and more.

Here's How:

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the BAT file below.

Restart-Time.bat

(Contents of BAT file for reference)
Code:

2 Save the BAT file to your desktop.

3 Unblock and run the BAT file.

4 When prompted, close all running apps, then press a key or click/tap on OK to restart Windows. (see screenshot below)

Restart_time_BAT-1.png

5 You will see your Windows restart time shortly after the computer has finished restarting and you are back on the desktop. (see screenshot below)

6 You can now delete the BAT file if you like.

That's it,

I just used the .vbs file from the sevenforums site. Works perfectly on W11. Any chance you could make that available to our 11forum members as well? (Many of them are probably not W7Forums members, and wouldn't have access to the files there.)
Done.

You can change the path in the command in the BAT file to use the correct path of where you moved it to.
@Brink, I have changed the path to %ProgramData% in the attached BAT file so as to avoid problems, as no one would move/relocate/rename the ProgramData folder, which is hidden by default. Would you consider replacing my old version with this new version?

That is one of the reasons why I have written "Restart-Time.bat", which can be used instead of VBScript.
Yes, that runs fine, Defender doesn't object at all.

Thank you mate. I went ahead and removed the VBS option since Windows Security doesn't like it for some reason. :(

I saved the BAT file to the desktop. When ready, I pressed the space bar. It flashed an error and rebooted. When it started again it didn't show the time and complained that it couldn't find a location. Tried again and the batch file did not start after reboot.

I'll try again sometime. Win 11 Pro.

Edit: Just a thought, CMD is no longer used on my machine. Everything opens in Terminal. I wonder if that will affect the outcome?

I just tested the BAT file on my laptop running build 25231, and it still works for me.

It did take a few moments after the restart before the prompt below showed.

BobD asked if having Terminal as the default for running batch files instead of Cmd, a change introduced in 22H2 22621, made any difference. Brink's test appears to have used Cmd.

I have tested with Terminal. It does make one minor difference, though not one that would affect the results. With Cmd the windows are resized to a small window that just displays the relevant text. Using Terminal the windows does not get resized. Terminal opens at its normal size.

When 11 was released on 5th October it was re-imaged back to 10 and was offered the upgrade in Windows Update on 20th October. Windows Update offered the 22H2 Feature Update on 20th September 2022. It got the 23H2 Feature Update on 4th November 2023 through Windows Update.

Win 11 Pro 22H2
The error that flashes just before booting is " Invalid Syntax : SET ET=%%# "
and it happens on both my machines. I can no longer open a CMD or PS window. They both open in Terminal.

I have a work around. Because of the error, the batch file does not start after restart.
I just start the batch file as soon as I see the desktop and I get a result that looks OK.
My desktop takes 54 seconds and my laptop takes 45 seconds.

The problem I have with this batch file is the time it returns is... wrong.
Using the bat file, I get 63 seconds. Using a stop watch I get 36 seconds. That's pretty far off. ^^

I start the stop watch when I click on... Shut down or sign out > Restart ...and stop it when I'm back on desktop and can open the browser.

/edit

Correction.. 44 seconds with stop watch (including typing the password).
I forgot, I turned off fastboot in the BIOS, a few days ago.

Do you have a lot of items included in the above "Run" key? If so, that will significantly increase the restart time measured by the batch script.

It looks like there may have been a permissions problem. I ran the original timer script from my desktop.
I'm looking into the permissions angle now.
