General See Windows 11 Restart Time

  • Staff
Restart_Time_banner.png

This tutorial will show you how long it takes Windows 11 to restart and get back to the desktop.

It would be recommended to disable the delay of running startup apps below to get a more accurate restart time.

You can also view the startup logs in Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) in the Applications and Services Logs (takes a moment to load) > Microsoft > Windows > Diagnostics-Performance > Microsoft-Windows-Diagnostics-Performance/Operational log. The logs will be in the middle to show you what ran at startup, how long it took, and more.

Here's How:

OK, I have it now. In Terminal, I have a Command window and a PowerShell window defined. The Powershell window was the default. When your batch file was run it opened PowerShell. It had no capability of accessing the batch file. See the attachment. I made Command the default and it worked OK to the point of booting. I will boot it very soon and post back.

I suspect that your desktop folder path contains a special character. Next time when a problem has arisen, put the script into "D:\" and run it there.

After the restart, did you log into the same account from which the script had been run?
No special characters in my desktop PathName
Apart from Administrator, I only have one account on my machines and I used that one only.
Even when I used Terminal.Command it was unable to get a result using the Desktop.
I successfully ran the script from D:\
It seems that usage of Terminal may present some minor difficulties for scripts in general.
Thanks for your assistance.

OK, I have it now. In Terminal, I have a Command window and a PowerShell window defined. The Powershell window was the default. When your batch file was run it opened PowerShell.
This was an assumption by me and I now believe that it was incorrect. What made it difficult was the use of Title in MW's bat file. It masked the header which would have indicated whether it was a PowerShell or a Command window that was open. Then when I had time to think about it, the Title command would not have worked in a PS window. I wrote a couple of very simple scripts with Echo "string" and Pause in them. One a BAT file and the other a PS1 file. They both opened in the correct type (CMD or PS) of Terminal window regardless of which type was the default.

For my system, it appears that MW's bat file needs to be located in a folder with no Windows Permissions problems. This is probably so for most systems. It's late now so I'll run the restart timer tomorrow on my machines.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Do you have a lot of items included in the above "Run" key? If so, that will significantly increase the restart time measured by the batch script.

Well, I'm on Win 10 at the moment.
All I have in that key is the "default" entry.
But I have the same software load out on both Win 10 and Win 11.

1. Anyone who can successfully mess around with this powershell "code", impresses me already.
2. Maybe instead of reading that registry key, there might be a way to say... poll the RTC (real time clock), chip?
3. Or poll a more easily accessible, "counter" based on the RTC, somewhere?
4. Or maybe poll the BIOS time/date?
5. Start the timer like you do now, and stop it when a certain (not delayed), Service starts?

In short, I think there must be a better way.

Stop watches are pretty accurate these days.
Even the one on my $30 flip phone is accurate to thousandths of a second.
I give you my word, I'm not cheating, and there does seem to be a large discrepancy, between the stop watch and the batch file.

I start the stop watch when I click on... Shut down or sign out > Restart ...and stop it when I'm back on desktop and can open the browser. That even includes me typing in my password.

With Fastboot (BIOS) disabled, the stop watch is showing times approx. 30% faster than the batch file.

One thing I did notice, is that once I'm back on the desktop, it takes quite a while for the batch file's windows to pop up again.
Maybe that's the problem. Maybe there needs to be a different trigger to "stop" the batch file's timer?

I mean I can start the game: Doom 2, before that timer says I'm done restarting.

I understand that if everyone uses the same batch file, the results "will" be comparable.
But it would be nice if they were more accurate as well.

WAI: "Darn peons, they're never happy". :D

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
Maybe there needs to be a different trigger to "stop" the batch file's timer?
The timer will be stopped as soon as the batch script runs after the restart. The sooner the script runs, the sooner the timer will be stopped. I don't know whether there is a way to run the script earlier after the restart, but we can try other ways.

Please run the attached script and see whether the pop-up will appear earlier.

It "seems" to be all around faster (I'm on Win 10 atm), but didn't give me a time...

Image1.png

I ran it again, and timed it with stop watch... time to appear was still 63 seconds.

Image1.png

Weird, how the times in both logs end at :09

I DID unblock the .bat file and run as Admin.

On onlly the stopwatch... it took me 46 seconds from clicking restart to open browser, this time.
Probably typed the password a bit slower, I just woke up. :-)

There used to be another topic about "restart time" (maybe still is).

On Win 11 I used to get 36 seconds with BIOS Fastboot turned on, and 41 seconds with it disabled.
Which makes sense. I have post delay set to 5 seconds.
But that was the time from clicking restart to only reaching the desktop.

But that was quite a few Windows Updates ago. I was still on 22000.xxx
I'd guess at least 2-3 months ago.

I'm gonna switch to Win 11 and time this again.

Ok... 1st, I'm just gonna time from clicking restart to hitting the desktop after reboot.

The stopwatch didn't start. :/
Ok, I try again.

Ok... 49 seconds from clicking restart till I hit the desktop again.

Now, I do with batch file...

The batch file "never" re-appeared. I waited over two minutes.

Hmmm... old batch file finally appeared...

The bat file window never re-opened, but when I double clicked the bat file again, I got this...

I checked the .log ...it still just shows time/date

Do not run it as an administrator.

I still haven't figured out how to shut the last run... OFF :-)

I deleted it... re-downloaded it, stopped cmd.exe in task manager... but it's still going...

Image1.png

Restarted explorer and it's still going.

Signed out and back in.... and it's still going

I've pressed a key to close this window... numerable times.... and it's still going.
Complete reboot and it's still going.

This is the .bat file from post #46 I believe.
Now... I'm clicking on the newest bat file, but it still brings up the old bat file's window... it's up to 1424 seconds now.

Ok... I restored from a backup. I assume that stopped this batch file. :-)

I also removed that MS Edge entry from...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

I rebooted and it stayed gone.

I restored from a backup.
You don't need a backup. Just run the following two lines of commands from elevated Command Prompt, and the changes made by the script will be undone.
Code:
REG Delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" /V "1_Measure_the_restart_time_via_a_script_provided_by_Ten_Forums" /F

Del "%ProgramData%\1_Measure_the_restart_time_via_a_script_provided_by_Ten_Forums.log"

Then, run the script WITHOUT administrative privileges and see whether it will display the time.
The script will automatically undo the changes as long as you have run it WITHOUT administrative privileges.

I just ran the one from @Brink's tutorial. It works.
All I did was "unblock"

It took me 49 secs from hit any key until I came back to desktop (including typing my password).
60 secs to pop up the cmd window, and I got a time of 63 secs.

I'm on Windows 10

Image1.png

And Last BIOS time in Task Manager says 18.0 secs
With Fastboot enabled in the BIOS... this would be 13-14 secs.

Ok... I'm back on Windows 10... I ran the script from post #49.
I get this...

It didn't even tell me to restart
You firstly have to delete the old log file by running the following command from elevated Command prompt:
Code:
Del "%ProgramData%\1_Measure_the_restart_time_via_a_script_provided_by_Ten_Forums.log"

Then, run the script attached to post #49 without administrative privileges.

Ok... there's no script in Program data after running the one from post #46
Now trying the one from #49

/edit

Pretty much same results. 50 secs to desktop...
62 secs for cmd window to open... restart time says 65 secs.

I'm probably a bad person to do this testing... I can't be consistent with typing the password.
I also have Bitdefender Internet Security for my AV/firewall <---- can't really shut this off without uninstalling it.
I can disable the AV/firewall and Threat Defense, but they are still "running", they're just not doing anything.
I only type with three fingers. My password is fairly fast though. :-)

Ok.

I just did a regular restart from clicking Restart
From then till back on Desktop = 46 seconds (includes typing my password)

Like I said before... I can instantly open the browser (Firefox) at that time.

Bitdefender and AIDA64 aren't up yet, ofc, but I can do things like...
Browser, Winver, screenshots, PSP7, ...pretty much everything.

Remember though... I got all the Windows Apps... removed or disabled. And my only "instant" startup programs are...

Image1.png

I have a few delayed start programs.
Like... Bitedefender, AIDA64, EVGA Precision

Lastly, I have nothing except the Default entry in...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

"RunOnce" is empty too.

Still assembled, still runs. Haven't turned it on for 13 years?
@Ghot, let's do another test.

(1) Copy the attached script "Get_the_time.bat" into the following folder:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\

(2) Run the following command from Command Prompt:
PowerShell Get-Date > C:\Timestamp.txt && Shutdown -r -f -t 00

Windows will be immediately restarted.
"Get_the_time.bat" will be run at Windows startup.
Post the output here.
