I just hope no one is paying ridiculous prices for those ridiculously unneeded download speeds :)
Some of us are IT professionals and saying that high internet speeds are "ridiculously unneeded" is like saying racing cars are unnecessarily fast. Imagine if we are working with a task and the task requires us to download a file. If I had to wait for the download to finish, then my ability to work will be greatly impaired. I have gigabit speed and I utilize it fully. Yes, I was insulted by your comment... xd

Great to see speeds approaching 1Gbps are becoming more normal these days -- although in a lot of cases uploads still seem to be really slow. I'd expect to see uploads at least being 90% the speed of download speeds -- especially if you want to run any type of small Internet server.

With proper fibre optic cable there's no typical capacity constraints - especially in lower populated cities but even in London, L.A, NYC there are pretty reasonable speeds to be had. The old copper exchanges and old "modem" type of things did have those problems especially as they were being shared with the old "wired" phone systems. Most people I know don't even have a "Wired phone" any more. !!. You'll find soon even 1Tbps will start being rolled out soon enough to domestic consumers (it's already available for businesses, FOREX, Market exchanges Wall st etc).

Be rather amusing if after having dug up and caused chaos in towns by laying fibre optic cables they have to go through the whole exercise again in a few years -- but knowing how local authorities work in most areas don't be surprised. !!!! All countries are probably the same in this regard.

@flyer

The price of being in the outback I suppose - but there are other compensations. !!!

Cheers
jimbo

We have all these good speeds only to find that servers might be bogged down and slow on delivering requests ..or the Internet backbone has lots of traffic to deal with ..or the local area is overloaded and slow.

There must be a speed at which the benifits dwindle to zero for the average person. Having speeds which would probably satisfy an office block are simply of no value other than being able to boast about. I normally get 215/21 from Virgin fibre, at the moment it is down to 95/21 and I have not noticed any difference. I would be happy with 25/10 as long as it was reliable, before the fibre was installed in our street, I got 7/2 if I was lucky and the poor phone lines, underground in corroded aluminium held up, and I live on the edge of a town of 86000, not in the country.
Speak for yourself, John! :zany: We have all manner of professionals as well as hobbyists and everything in between in these forums.

I am a home user; however, I teach Windows 11 at our local Senior Citizen Center and create tutorials for my students.

I have gone the gamut from way back when we had to use a modem to get a 3 baud rate to my current speed of 100 Megabits per second. Yes, 100 mbps is adequate for my needs. But because I am a home user, am I an average person who does not need that one 100 megabits per second?

Would I be happy with 25 megabits per second? Not no, but HE double toothpick no! I have been there and suffered through low speed downloads of things necessary for giving my students as much knowledge as possible.

Now let's examine what would happen with your average user who could only get 25 megabits per second. Speaking as if I am that average user, I cannot imagine updating both my RTM Windows, let alone my Insider Build of Windows with 25 megabits per second!

BTW, we only get about 12.5 mbps speed at our Senior Center! You betcha, I can tell the difference!

So they lowered my bill $10.00 a month and increased my speed from 100/100 to 300/300. :-)
