Back in 2001 when I first got high-speed Internet it was 1.5Mbps. They said it was up to 50 times faster than Dial-Up. The fastest Dial-Up I had was about 40Kbps which sounds about right. Note 56Kbps was only theoretical so 30-40Kbps was normal. Hopefully your Internet connection is a lot faster than that.

I have avoided full fibre as cost is pretty high but just got a 900 mbps deal for £29/month and currently paying £25/month for 72 mbps.

So I will be posting my speeds soon.

I have a 1200Mbps connection with Comcast cable line as is..
ARRIS SurfBoard SB8200 (capable of a max 10Gbps download speed or so it says..)

but you want fiber?

I’m in Australia, which probably has the most convoluted messed up internet in the world, thanks to political showdowns. I started with dialup in this house 14 years ago, then to satellite. Fibre will be a welcomed change. Currently with a FTTN connection, I can only achieve 115/40mbps

Well, I got 900 mbps fibre installed and the ethernet speed was fine at 925 mbps up/down.

However wifi was much lower at 400 mbps up/down.

I checked all my cables were cat 6 or above.

No matter what settings I changed, I could not improve the wifi.

The wifi router I have only has two bands 2.4 GHZ and 5 GHZ and in the end, my specs indicated they are good for 866 mbps but I could not get that no matter what. I bought a cheapish wifi 6 router and daisy chained it to main router by ethernet lan to lan, disabled dhcp on new router, gave new router a static ip address, and Boom - over 800 mbps up/down. I then disabled wifi on main router and all is fine.

I guess I will never get the full 900 mbps with wifi as it always carries a bit of wifi performance overhead, but 800 mbps is pretty damn good. for a domestic consumer.

cereberus, I’ve been playing with my new 1000Mbps connection. I can currently obtain 900 to 1000 Mbps via ethernet, wireless 500Mbps. It’s a new router so I doubt it is the problem but I do know for certain that I am getting much higher speeds using 5Ghz as apposed to the 2.4. I’ll post if I can work out how to improve the wireless. In OZ, we are only able to get 45Mbps upload unless we go on a business plan and pay $400 a month lol But I am getting the full 45Mbps upload. Australian ISP’s are so generous.

I think they are capping wifi connections as that is what most use.

Also wifi sppeds are sensitive to distance.

My earlier theory about wifi 6 router is shot in flames - back to around 400 mbps.

You will always get higher speeds on 5 GHZ as it is related to MIMO setup. Not an expert but think of them as blocks, and 2.4 GHZ only has one block. but 5 GHZ has e.g. 2x2 block setup and can process more data.

How would they know if you were using wifi or ethernet? Surely all the ISP see’s is the connection to your router and what happens after that isn’t in their realm. Or are you using Wireless data service? As apposed to Fibre? (I also know nothing) So many variables.

My provider supplied an AIO device - ROuter, Wi-Fi, authent (as they claim) and more. It's Wi-Fi is horrendous, too, and I quickly bought my own APs and disabled the on-board Wi-Fi.

Never looked back.
