Been on 500mbps Fibre to the Premises for 5 years now. With no kids, it's plenty fast enough for browsing, watching Netflix and my Wife working from home. Cost here in the UK for that speed, is anything from GBP30 upward. I pay GBP 36.99 (approx USD50) per month. The only way we can keep the prices down here, is renegotiate with our ISP or completely switch ISP every 24 months.

I often wonder why some folks get so fixated with mega speeds, but then I'm not a gamer or downloading huge files etc all the time.

If you own over a dozen devices that stay connected to the internet 1Gbps isn't overkill. If you're running a home network it helps. A fast upload speed also helps it you upload videos to web sites like YouTube. Internet in Canada is extremely expensive. $100 US per month for 1Gbps here isn't unusual. I just recently got fibre to my door and the difference is impressive.

To be fair and I didn't mention it in my previous post, but I do have a minimum of 24 devices pretty much connected 24/7, everything from the dishwasher, washing machine, iPad's, iPhone's, iP security cameras etc. As I say, with 500mbps fibre straight into the house, speed isn't an issue but I get it, if you're on 1gb speeds and it does it for you, then it's a win win all round. It is true though that there are many folks out there who get sucked into this whole 'I absolutely must have the fastest speed I can get' mentality, which is fine, they are at the end of the day paying for it, in some cases, far too much for a product they probably don't even need. I can get 900mbps speed GBP1.00 cheaper than my current 500mbps, but I just don't need it and anyway, after 12 months the price goes up as we're locked into 24 month contracts here. In ten months time when I switch ISP, I'll be back to paying around GBP30 a month for 500mbps.

Until the price of very high speed internet is reduced to a reasonable monthly cost, I'll just stick with what I have because in the grand scheme of things, having a faster speed won't make any difference to our situation. Also, I don't ever, upload videos to YouTube or any other social media, it's just web browsing in this household.

When I dropped from 1gbps to 500 mbps I did notice a difference. I don't even use WiFi but I certainly noticed more lag. I don't know if it was because I was on cable (no one else was hooked up to the junction outside my door) or if it was because the cable ran through a swamp but I'm off the copper now. I'm certainly paying for it but 1Gbps up and down seems to be optimum for me. To be honest, I don't quite get the full gigabit but it's close enough and as long as it remains over 900 mbps I'll be happy. My daughters are avid gamers so that might be part of it. I'm probably spoiled, but it's only one small luxury for an old guy who likely earned it. Others have much faster speeds than I do where I live. I have no clue what they do with that speed. Sure is nice to live in a tiny little town in the middle of nowhere and still have fibre.

I'm just a retired (youngish retiree!) who just browses. My PC is probably total overkill for just browsing

but I don't suffer poor speeds or lag at all. Maybe down to my choice of browser, no adware slowing stuff down etc. I recently added a brand new WiFi card to my PC to properly utilise WiFi 6/7 speeds ready for when I upgrade my existing router and perhaps, move to 1Gbps Wifi when the price is right.

Southern Tennessee Fiber 1Gbps

Well, I put in my application for a fiber drop, symmetric 1Gbs. The official portal says it is now available for install at my address. Prices from the providers are all in the same tight range of just under $70 a month US.
Currently I have a fixed wireless setup with Althea. 50Mbs up/down with 5msec ping.
Now, about that 'available at my address' thing. My nearest neighbor is an air mile away, somewhat more by road. When they installed the fiber lines about a year ago, that's where they stopped. They did not go the rest of the way up the hill. There was no construction and no warning stakes for the underground cable install as there was all the way down the rest of the hill, to the bottom and down to the main highway, about 5 miles. So I am expecting sort of reply telling me it is not available now and awaiting future funding... or words to that effect.

Ha.. just got a call from the PUD. Technically I could have fiber installed but, it is 8000' to their nearest equipment and I would have to pay that cost.

It's frustrating when they lay the lines so close but not up to your area. Here's hoping you can get it!

I remember a guy a few years back got around the same issue by discovering the contract the cable company signed with the city said they would provide everyone in the city access to their cable. The guy lived with in the city limits and the cable company had to run cable to his house.

I updated my Telus Fiber optic and I now have this. Where it was 300 Download and 300 Upload. And I pay $20.00 lass a month. WTF...

sad thing is when you get over 500 mbs, there are no services or websites that give you anything close to that for up and down.

I find my 2,300Mbps helps with bigger downloads like the Nvidia graphics drivers and large video game downloads on Steam...
and battle .net for say World of Warcraft updates or installs...
