I'm in the process of figuring out if I want to rebuild my computer (new CPU only?) or invest in a new computer.

The only computer, for no good reason except it seems special (marketing?? - no) and its not a Dell (mediocre? overpriced?) that I've noticed is the Ryzen.

I know this thread is old and I might get no replies...regardless (I really appreciate this about this forum--that one can revisit old threads...and take a chance.)

  • What is it about the Ryzen that caused you to buy one?
  • Did it meet your expectations?
  • What didn't you like?
  • Ya da, Ya, da, Ya da...

What is it about the Ryzen that caused you to buy one?

Price, does what I need, and doesn't require all the microcode updates.
I've been buying AMD CPUs and Nvidia graphics cards, for a long time.

Intel I7 7700HQ (Laptop)

Prior to Intel 10700 Processor, i had For Desktop Intel I7 7700 to Match the Gaming Laptop, Prior to that had AMD FX 8310, and Radeon R7 240 video card, that experience wasn't that good to me, but if it comes down to Price or features i want in the future, i'm not turned off with trying AMD Ryzen with Radeon video card (always used Radeon video cards whenever i had an AMD Processor) But for now sticking with Intel i think

I've gone back and forth between AMD and Intel over the years. I did a build 3 years ago for my son, a Ryzen 7-3800x. I did a build for myself about 2 years ago, Ryzen 9 5900x, and a I did a build for my wife about 18 months ago, Ryzen 5 5600x.

The reason I went with Ryzen at the time was performance was top-notch, and Ryzen AM4 boards had support for PCI-E Gen 4. All of our motherboards are Asus X570 variants, and i liked the features and benefits from that chipset. Price was probably a tad lower on the AMD processor, although price wasn't really a big concern.

I'm 1000% satisfied with these AMD processors and if I had to do it all over again, I would do exactly the same thing. In a few years time, when its time to build again, I will of course evaluate AMD/Intel and will go with whichever one seems best at that time.

  • Were all you Ryzeners going for a gaming computer?
  • Are you stuck with a case you can't upgrade parts in
  • (CPU, GPU, Power Supply, Fan(s) essentially, what else is there that you can't easily mount outside the case?)?
  • Are the prices as good as they seem on the website?
  • Some of the 21 products look like computers (i.e., metal boxes);
  • others are cardboard boxes. What's the difference? Why don't they take them out of the boxes?
  • What's missing, beside monitors?
  • Does Ryzen sell laptops?

You cannot just upgrade the CPU. Modern CPU's wont go in your mobo.

Nope, that's 9 (intel) generations old system. With intel, 2 generations of socket and chipset is about maximum. Intel and AMD didn't have mutually compatible motherboards since 386 processors.

I despised Intel since the beginning for their high price policy. My first favorites were Motorola and Z80 processors. Other than those in form of Atari ST computers i switched when first x386 CPUs arrived and even skipped Intel and started with Cyrix and AMD, half price of Intel but very little advantage. Since 1995 only AMD, it was always better value for money. Even as a heavy underdog to Intel or maybe because of that, AMD was always innovator and stated several revolutions like 32 and 64 bit and multi core CPUs for general consumers.
With AMD I went thru every generation, usually starting from simplest and cheapest ones and upgrading within year or two as their socket compatibility lasted longer than Intel. Even now my stomach churns when I see "Intel inside" logo.
My last system before Ryzen was with FX 8350 processor which wasn't as good and powerful as contemporary Intel top CPUs when overclocked to 4.9-5GHz came close enough for my needs.
Ryzen came as very pleasant surprise and was my first all new system in many years. As usual I started relatively low, Ryzen 1600x which blew my mind being 3-4 times better than FX 8350 while having less cores. Steady progression since then with mid range (as usual) to 1700x. 2700x, 3700x, now 5800x and all the while change MB only once and even that wasn't because of compatibility problem, match that Intel !!!!
Selling previous parts in time meant minimal money loss and once, selling my R7 2700x and x370 MB to upgrade to 3700x and x470 MB i even made some money.
Right now, I'm debating upgrade to R9 5950x which would give me substantial CPU upgrade while keeping everything else or building brand new platform based on Ryzen 7700x with DDR5 and everything that comes with it. My problem is in not much more power/performance which I'm not desperate for versus a lot more money of which as a pensioner don't have enough to spend on essentially a "toy"at this moment. I'm about to sell couple of motorcycles I can't ride any more and will see how this winter goes and in spring AMD is releasing new Ryzen generation so it's definite possibility to skip a generation for once and go for (near) top at that time.

You can buy laptops that have a Ryzen CPU. I bought my wife an ASUS laptop with a Ryzen, for instance.
