Solved Sleep/Hibernate mode

I am on 23H2 2024-04, Windows 11. My laptop is an HP 15z-ef1. It has 8GB of ram. All along, for two years, it was acting with no problems. I recently refreshed it and reinstalled windows because of a blue screen of death. Now, after a period of inactivity, 3-4 hours at least, I have a hard time waking it from sleep. No matter how I look at the settings, I never find anything other than simple sleep. I had never had problems with simple sleep. This seems like hibernation or suspend, and my version of windows does not find that in settings when I search for a setting. Anyway, I press the power button, I press keys, I stir the mouse, no reaction. It takes 2 or 3 minutes to wake it. What is this? How can it be solved? Thanks.

In my laptop the manufacturer head disabled the option to enable customised power options. And because of that only sleep was available. I went into control panel and manually went through each of those power options and was able to manually create a new profile and also enable Hibernate along with it.

After reading your answers, I changed my settings to 'never', Edwin.
Also, glasskutter, to the powercfg -a. It says this:

Standby (S3)
Hibernate
Hybrid Sleep
Fast Startup
Guess we'll see tomorrow morning when I open my laptop what happens. Will post back.

Sometimes, the problem is that the laptop does not really shut down fully. Does it have a power-on light? When it won't 'wake' have you tried holding the power button down for thirty seconds? This would ensure that the laptop is actually fully shutdown. Have you looked at the reliability history under Control Panel...Security and Maintenance....Security?

Yeh, that's one of the reasons why I gave up on sleep and hibernate. Back many versions of Windows, it all seemed hit and miss ... worked on this device, didn't work on that device. More often not working than did work.

Always found it a bit gimmicky, as if only used to appease the users environmental conscience about power saving.

I never knew whether it was device related or Windows related, just wasn't worth the effort so disabled both ever since.

And in any case, devices are built a bit more stable these days, sleep/hibernate probably doesn't make much difference to the lifetime

Don’t all laptops these days go into S3 (Suspend to Ram) sleeping state? I think you can disable that.

There is also “Possibly” a setting in your BIOS.

No, modern standby(S0) has been the default in laptops for several years now and it's actually not sleep at all in the way we think of sleep. Some users who keep the lid of their laptop closed when not in use or who carry it in an enclosed case have reported various detrimental issues of using S0, overheating being the main one.
Some laptops UEFI bios allow the user to enable S3 with a regedit but most do not. Brink gives a good explanation of the difference in S0 and S3 here.
