Solved SSD much slower on one computer than others

I know what you mean. The two USB-A 10Gbps ports on my desktop are on the back of the computer. Since the computer is on the floor under my desktop it is a real pain to get to these ports. When I tested the external SSD with these ports the enclosure hung by its short cord from the port. I ended up buying a powered USB 3.1 hub to access these ports from the front of the computer.

I canā€™t make out the USB logos on the front PC panel. You should, with a bit of hope, be able to distinguish between the 5Gb and the 10GB USB Type A ports (USB images ā€Identifying USB portsā€ in post 11)

Of check the manual I linked which may point them out.

I wonder if there was a bug in the BIOS that was causing the problem.

In any case the new speed looks typical for USB 3.0 port. (5Gbps or 625 MBps). It would be twice as fast on a USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 port (10Gbps or 1250 MBps). Note these are theoretical speeds so your lower measure speeds are expected.

BTW, I picked up a Samsung T7 SSD 4TB yesterday for $237. It was Amazon Prime day deal. When I get it I will see how fast it is.

I only bought the 4TB Samsung T7 for temporarily storage. I also bought a 16TB Western Digital Elements external HDD for $237. 4TB is not enough to back up my main desktop. I found out a long time ago that the backup drive has to be at least twice as big as the drives(s) you are going to back up. More is even better. The new external HDD is 4 times the drives being backed up.

BTW, the HDD is a lot slower than the SSD but the backups are taking place overnight so speed is not important.

I also saw those big, beautiful WD HDDs. The 12TB version was a special bargain. Have fun with your new toy.

Look at the port itself, 3 usually is blue on the connector I think, I could be wrong though. One thing came to thought, have you tried turning turning the connector on one end upside down to see if it makes a difference as someone did mention in another thread, that is the case with some adapters and might be the case with cables too. The guage of the wires also makes a difference which is why even for Samsung phones, people have better luck with USB 2.0 cables with the MicroB connector using a USB-C adapter than using a USB-C cable.

I just got the Samsung T7 4TB and Western Digital Elements 16GB drives today. The Samsung T7 works great but the Western Digital Elements not so much. When I plugged it in a message popped up saying it needed to be initialized. When I said Yes it gave an error. I am in the process of returning it for a refund. So much for that Prime Day deal.

I tested the Samsung T7 4TB drive on my other laptop. Note USB 3.1 is only faster than USB 3.0 for sequential read/write. They are about the same for random read/write.

People used to do that but probably not as much anymore. Now people probably connect to the phone or camera using either a USB cable or by WiFi.

The only time I bother with reading/writing SD or microSD cards is for my Raspberry Pis. They boot with a microSD card. My old laptop only has a SD card slot. I have microSD to SD card adapters to use with that. My new laptop doesn't have any card readers. I use a microSD to USB adapter to read/write microSD cards.

I just got a Samsung T7 Shield 4TB SSD & this drive came with two cables a USB A to USB C & a USB C to a USB C. Both are 10GB cables & have the SS trident logo on all three USB A ports & the USB C single port has the SS USB logo on it, too. The SS trident-only logo ports are only 5Gbps ports.

Of the two cables I found the only logo was on the USB-A connector. If you wouldn't have said so then I wouldn't have known because it is hard to see. I did take of picture of it and enhanced the result.

I wanted to test whether that was Super Speed or Super Speed+. The only reliable way for me to do this was to connect the USB-C to USB-A cable to a USB-A to USB-C USB 3.1 adapter. I could then then test it with a USB-C USB 3.1 port. The results are:
Sequential Read/Write speeds
USB-C to USB-C: 975/935 MB/s
USB-C to USB-A (with USB-A to USB-C adapter cable): 970/909 MB/s

There was a little loss as expected but not very much.

The aforementioned jpg that you provided with the SS Trident logos are the ā€Šnewer symbols for the 480Mbps/5Gbps/10Gbps speeds. On older computers when the 10Gbps speed was atvits infancy there was the "SS+ Trident logo"; where the plus symbol " + " rrepresented the 10Gbps port on the notebook/PC ports.

On my ASUS Q504UAK notebook all my ports are 5Gbps & marked with the "SS Trident Logo" (with ā€Šno plus symbol). So I have 3x USB A & 1x USB C (4 ports) that can handle 5Gbps speeds.

Which isn't bad considering I have a SATA 2TB Samsung SSB 870 EVO internal drive & a NVMe 1TB Samsung SSD flash stick installed for storage on an Asus UX560UAK motherboard. šŸ˜‰
