Still stuck on 22H2

I’m still stuck on 22H2 and I’m trying to upgrade to 23H2. I have 23H2 on a USB stick and when the setup start I get the message “We can’t tell if your PC has enough space to continue installing Windows 11” My SSD has 110 GB used space and 127 GB of free space. I’m pretty sure that the install want to create a Windows.old folder. Since 22H2 is no longer supported you have to upgrade to 23H2, so there’s no need to waste space of a backup windows.old folder. Also I use Macrium Reflect and have a few image files on an external drive so if I want to go back to 22H2 I can do so. Now is there a way to tell the installer not to create a backup folder because I have enough free space to do the install?

AlsoI have the file KB 5027397 to force windows update to download 23H2. Big problem there. If I install the file and reboot as requested I end up with a black screen. Nothing on the screen. IF I click CTRL-ALT-DEL I get the Task Manager screen which is the only thing I can get on the screen. So I end up using Macrium Reflect to go back to 22H2. I have the latest video display update from AMD. So why do I get the black screen? If I install KB 5027397 and KB 5050021 at the same time and re-boot I still get the same black screen. I would prefer using this method instead of re-installing windows from the USB stick which would be faster. So any advices would be appreciated. Thank You.

Hi, welcome.

Try to increase the size of your “recovery partition”. I had to do this for my sons 22H2 to 23H2. So if it’s around 600mb, make it 1GB
Can’t say it will work but that’s the info I received and it worked for me.

@antspants you're talking about the EFI, not recovery partition, correct? I've only ever seen the EFI partition throw that type of error in relation to windows updates... but i could be wrong..

Yes i can do that. As for the video at the bottom i had no problem with cmd portion, as for the partition portion i had no luck. Tried many programs with no success.

ok when on the black screen with a cursor, use task manager to open regedit and:

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

check the String Value named "Shell" and ensure it's value is
Code:
explorer.exe

if not, edit it to be and restart

FYI if indeed it is for lack of space, you will run into the same problem the next time there's another upgrade. You might want to consider getting a bigger drive.

There's no way around the procedure creating a windows.old folder during any upgrade. Why not just move your personal files off onto an external drive.

Well, finally the problem solved itself. When, the other times I checked regedit there were only four entries in Winlogon and no shelI entry. I thought about creating one. Before that I had checked in windows and I have 36 entries including the shell string. Don’t know if it’s normal to have so many in there. So I tried one last time with installing KB 5027397 and KB5050021 and this time it worked. I don’t know why the other times I was getting the black screen. At the last resort after watching a YouTube video I tried using GPedit to force windows to download 24H2. I tried putting 23H2 instead but it didn’t worked. When the problems on 24H2 are resolved we will probably get it in windows update. Anyway I just want to thank you for your numerous replies and wish you a nice day.
