My wife has a Dell Inspiron 3535 laptop. I need to connect to it using RealVNC. When the lid is closed, and I try to connect, it connects but just shows a black screen. I have all the setting for when the lid is closed set to Sleep Never.

Anyone have any ideas what to do to fix this problem?

Wanting to connect to your wife's laptop while it is not in use (lid closed) sounds like snooping on your wife to me so you may not get much help on this request. Just a heads-up as I see it.

?? Where is this setting? If it's in proprietary software that came with the device then it's next to useless.

Control Panel > Power Options are Windows' settings.

Sorry, no snooping involved! I run backups on her system every couple of days, and it's a lot easier to VNC into her laptop to initiate it than going to her computer and initiating the process. So right now I have to go to her machine and open the lid so I can connect to it.

I run them at night when we go to sleep.

Why not set up routine using Task Scheduler?
I'm using Synctoy for the backups. It includes copying her Firefox data, specifically the Mozilla folder, so I have to make sure Firefox is closed or that part of the backup doesn't run properly.

These are some trial and error steps to see if they make any difference:

a) When the black screeen is seen type: Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B.

b) administrative command prompt:
powercfg -h off

(to turn hibernation back on: powercfg -h on)

If it shows as connecting it might be that it's just the screen that turns off? Maybe the program you use needs the screen on- shot in the dark so to speak

When the lid is closed, and I try to connect, it connects but just shows a black screen

When the lid is closed, the display is off.
Perhaps that is the black screen you are looking at?

What power-sleep options are available on that laptop?
Find out by running this command and do post the results.
PowerCfg -a

Actually, I did find a solution.

If an HDMI cable is plugged in, then it works fine, even if the other end of the cable isn't connected to anything.

Go figure.

Thanks. By the way, I was trying to see how to edit any of my posts but can't see to find anything in the forum on how to do that. Can you point me in a direction on how to do that?

General forum advice:-

It's really worth making time to browse through the ElevenForum Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every ElevenForum page [within the Tutorials dropdown list].
- At the foot of the ElevenForum Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
- I download a new copy each month.
- By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
- ElevenForum tutorials are also listed at Tutorials and there's a shortcut to that at the top of every page.

You can search ElevenForum using the search box in the top-right corner of all ElevenForum webpages or using Advanced Search - ElevenForum
- You can also search ElevenForum threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:elevenforum.com after your search term. For example,
